Dedication
This photo journal is dedicated to the dancers and
partners who have touched my heart,
with their friendship, inspiration,
commitment and passion.
And to all dancers whose captivating grace
breathes life onto the stage, enchanting the world
with their spellbinding performances.
"To dance is to be out of yourself. Larger, more beautiful, more powerful. This is power, it is glory on earth and it is yours for the taking."
Agnes de Mille
People have asked why I chose to be a dancer. I did not choose. I was chosen to be a dancer, and with that, you live all your life.
Martha Graham

Stars of American Ballet created international headlines as the first Performing Arts Company to appear before multi-racial audiences during apartheid in South Africa.
Thereafter, Stars toured a record-breaking 66 American cities each year for the next three years.
The New York Times cited ‘Stars’ as The resurgence of Balanchine's legendary 'Ballet Caravan.
Before you join us on the journey across the world, meet a few of the dancers on the tour.

We had only two hours for a shoot since the dancers were learning new ballets. None of the men were available, but a few ladies had a few minutes.
I had planned to shoot in color, but there was one black and white frame left in the camera.
Marianna Tcherkassky was the first out of the dressing room.
We made eye contact; but we did not say a word. I lifted my camera.
Marianna was ‘on’ in a second. It was the same with all the other dancers as when they left the wings to go on stage.
Marianna Tcherkassky was a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre, performing the lead in major classical and contemporary works.
The New York Times reviewed Marianna as One of the greatest 'Giselle' that America has produced.
Marianna taught for the Bartholin Institute in Copenhagen, the University of Cincinnati.
She later became Ballet Mistress of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre with her husband and Artistic Director, Terrence Orr.
We took three color shots with Marianna, and she rushed off to rehearsal.
Cynthia Harvey joined American Ballet Theatre and starred in almost every ballerina role.
Cynthia had the unique distinction of being the first and only American dancer invited by Sir Anthony Dowell to be a Principal Ballerina of The Royal Ballet.
Miss Harvey also performed as a guest artist with companies formed by Baryshnikov and Nureyev, as well as many other major ballet companies throughout the world.
Cynthia joined American Ballet in the corps at sixteen, but we recognized her talent and she became the youngest member of the Stars of American Ballet.
After Miss Harvey retired from American Ballet Theatre, she coached for the Australian Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, and La Scala Ballet.
Years later, Cynthia returned to ABT to become the Director of American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School.
