Regnum Lumini - The Kingdom of Light - Tina Elare

    TINA C. ELARE

It was never a he or a she. It has a lot of names and titles, a lot of forms and shapes. But it always represented the same two things – good and power. It is the greatest light and the darkest abyss. It is everything, it is everywhere and there is no way of stopping it.

My truth and your truth are two different truths. But that does not mean one is right and one is wrong. We are different, our lives were different, our stories are different and our truths are different.

It was midnight. Cold winds surrounded the streets of Enotheron, clouds covered two moons watching over the Kingdom. Azeina was waiting for the final Thrones decision while thinking about the beginnings of her angelic services, when she was a guardian angel. The joys and concerns and all the love she had to offer, all the pain and all the struggle. These thoughts brought her down the memory lane and back where everything started.

As a twenty-eight year old, Azeina died drowning in the river in a small village in Slavonia, Pannonian Croatia. Her mother, Maria, was a famous witch and many women used to come to her for the elixirs of youth and fertility medication. Maria came from a long line of witches and mages. She was respected and worshipped in the village and beyond. Word has spread along the soldiers and traders and she as making a fortune. Maria’s elixirs and medications were made using Azeina’s blood because she believed her daughters blood had supernatural powers. Maria’s mother used to draw her blood too, believing that young witches blood had great power. Azeina was suffering from anaemia and was severely underweight and pale. Azeina died drowning in the river on a cold November day.

Azeina began her angelic service in the Kingdom of Light.

Her beauty was breath taking. Pale face, strong cheekbones, beautiful black eyes with red sparkle. Delicate, thin hands, long neck and incredibly shiny, dark brown long hair. Waves in her hair framed her face and made her look mysterious, yet kind and approachable. But Azeina had a great power and her strengths would soon to be discovered by a Superior, Ateh. He sent her to the Guards, angel protectors as her first job and it was clear that she was born to be an angel. After the death of a child she was looking after, she was assigned to another tasks, a different man. However, he died soon after he fell under the veil of her protection. Azeina felt defeated because she was loosing all the children and could not stop the illnesses and hardships that were a frequent cause of death at that time. Ateh then decided that it would be the best for Azeina to join the Angelic army. She was bold, brave and very powerful warrior and she thrived on the strength of her faith in human goodness. She was constantly on the battlefields and progressed to the rank of General of the Angelic army. Her strategies of warfare were critically acclaimed and famous and Azeina gained great fame across the Kingdom. She was one of the highest ranked archangel and was chosen by the Thrones and the Superior to be his heir, chief among the angels, queen of the Kingdom of light.

Midnight just passed and Ateh walked in Azeina’s palace. It was his palace when he was a Superior. He bent his knees in front of her, took her by the hand and kissed her.

I congratulate you, darling. With all my heart. Ateh got the news from the Thrones. Azeina was the chosen one.

Thank you, Ateh. Azeina was humble and anxious.

I thank you once again for everything you’ve done for me and it is a great honour to be your heir. But you should know that this is not what I want.

Azeina, do not fear anything. I know what you are capable of on the battlefield. Now, this is your battlefield and here is where you lead from. Ateh was convincing. He stood up and poured wine in two tall glasses.

Drink. He said. We don’t choose our paths, everything is already decided. You’re the next Superior and I know your reign will be longer and even more successful than mine. Don’t worry, they’re all there for you, on your side. You know it. Ateh said, finished his wine and left.

Night is long, cold and seems endless. The wind is coming in through the big windows of the palace and wandering through the hallways, long and wide, playing like an orchestra.

Azeina was concerned and her heart was full of fear. Superior Ateh was wise, experienced archangel and he held the throne for centuries. He had ashy white beard, grey hair and strong cheekbones. His eyes were greyish blue and he was strong and tall. Ateh was an archangel, a Superior, the order of the lordships, primes among all angels and just below those who are closest to the light, Thrones. Ateh was also called the general because at the beginning of his angel career he was in the army. After he left the army, he was at the helm of the angels for over eight hundred years as a Superior.

All angels in the realm are divided into three groups. First group are the guardian angels – angels who were assigned to all humans for protection. Every time a human being is born, an angel lays an oath to keep them safe and makes a commitment to a human for the rest of their life.

The second group were soldiers or the Angelic army which was hierarchically divided in general and officers  - higher rows of the archangels and lower rows of angels, ordinary soldiers and warriors.

The third group were the Messengers. Everything that happened on Earth and the universe and supposed to be delivered to the Kingdom, Messengers would pass to their Officers and then to the Council and Superior. Also, they delivered any news and messages sent from the Kingdom to humans. They would be responsible for safekeeping of ancient books, arts and city maintenance.

Every year Superior would recruit new angels as many of them retire during their service and new angels are then chosen as the replacement.  They are sent from different parts of the world, they are different races, genders, and ages, and Superior’s advisors would choose them. Superior would, in the end, decide the fate of each and every one of them by choosing their service paths.

Times were tough, ruthless and cruel for humans. After the first millennium, mankind was advanced in everything but in faith and humanity. They were discovering new crafts, the economy has prospered and grew each day but the human souls got rotten. There were wars, people hated on each other, envied and killed each other. World became a cruel place.

Azeina! Peniel shouted in front her chamber.

Come in Peniel. Azeina was happy to see her friend.

The Messenger came this morning with the news from the Papal States. I could not believe it, I had to go over there to make sure that it is true. All of our fears came true... Peniel continued talking as he walked in.

    I don’t understand. Azeina said.

Pope Urban the second held the church councils in Clermont and Piacenza.

    Are they starting a war?

"Azeina, war already began, they call it a holy war, and they are fighting it in the name of their god. They will not stop until they take what they consider it's theirs."

Why that is not predicted by Messengers? The hints were all there! Azeina got upset. She is just starting her reign and a war means she won’t have an easy beginning.

Maybe it will start in the conquests but quickly collapse. We need to stop it. You and me Peniel, now!

We knew it was coming, we knew since Gregory that they will not be any good. They all said the same thing. Messengers were blind, lead and mislead by Ateh! But prophets said that war is coming and millions of people will lose their lives. Millions of people Azeina.

We will have to stop this before it even starts. I cannot start my rule with a war raging on Earth! We do not have a strong army now. Until new recruits come and they are trained, we won’t have enough forces.

I’m saying this as a friend to a friend. We’ve been through a lot. You and me were the best warriors this Kingdom ever had, but tomorrow, I will officially give my resignation. Peniel’s eyes became watery. He bent his knees and begged her to release him of his duties.

No, Peniel, no! Azeina quickly responded. Are you seriously leaving me now?! I need you!

I respect you and I know that you’re going be a great leader, but you have to understand, this is just too much for me. I’m mentally not able to fight any more. Not without you by my side. Peniel stayed on his knees begging Azeina to release him.

I don’t understand! Why would my best friend leave me now?! When I’m to be a Superior of a Kingdom that needs a good army, good soldiers! I need you to lead the army, Peniel! I need you now more than ever! War, Peniel, war is starting and you should take command, stand by my side and fight!

Azeina, please, forgive me. You have to understand, I cannot do it any more. I don’t have the strength or the courage to do this.

Azeina turned towards the window, sun was rising and the wind stopped. Warm sun rays bathed her face. She closed her eyes and kept turning gold infinity loop bracelets under the white long sleeves of a dress she was wearing. She couldn’t look back at her friend.

I’m not going to be a general who loses people and angels on the fronts because of humans beliefs. There will be bloodsheds, Azeina, everything will burn in flames but I cannot be there, I cannot take the burden of loss. And if you want to be one, go ahead Azeina, fight and believe everyone can be saved. Maybe one day you will learn the lesson, not everyone and everything is as good as you. Goodbye. Peniel said and left.

Azeina knew that if Peniel retires she won’t have a good friend or a counsellor next to her. She had plans for him and he was a good soldier and a good person. Peniel was a friend. Great friend, supportive and loving. Azeina spent a lot of time with him since the beginning of her service and she loved him very much. It hurt her seeing him giving up on his life. Angel’s retirement is something that any angel could wish for if he gets the salvation, a positive final judgment. Superior or the Council would decide on angel’s faith and if salvation is deserved or not. If angel gets salvation, his soul may rest in eternal peace and glory, but if salvation is not earned, Superior decides on punishment that can be either the wastelands or the eternal fire, which is the greatest punishment for the angels. When angels get in the wastelands, they are often recruited by Dark forces ruled by Lucifer. Wastelands are land of nothingness around the Kingdoms and between the worlds. There is nothing but rocks, mountains and sand with random fires starting everywhere and wind blowing with extreme force. Some parts of wastelands are greener, with some trees growing but in rare locations.

Angels are considered spirits, they do not take physical form on Earth and many think they are emotionless creatures. The truth is they are actually very similar to humans as they were all humans before they died. Angels feel pain and love, sorrow and happiness. Pain is what Peniel felt. He was exhausted and defeated.

Peniel was around thirty years old when he died of pneumonia. He became an angel eleven years before Azeina died and joined the Kingdom. Peniel lived his earthly life in Paris in the Franconian State in 8th century. He left behind a wife and three young children.
