    Introduction

Definition and Origins of Gothic Literature

Gothic literature has its roots firmly planted in the literary landscape of the late eighteenth century. Gothic literature is a genre marked by enigmatic, frightening, and supernatural qualities.

Originally used to describe the Germanic tribes that contributed significantly to the fall of the Roman Empire, the term Gothic underwent a major change in meaning in literature during the Romantic period.

Gothic literature first appeared in the middle of the eighteenth century, and its peak years of publication were the 1760s and 1770s. But when Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto was published in 1764, it achieved its pinnacle in the late eighteenth century.

A significant personality in the literary and political spheres of his era, Walpole is frequently acknowledged as the author of the first Gothic novel. In this ground-breaking work, Walpole skillfully combined aspects of the supernatural with medievalism, paving the way for a new genre of literature.
