CRYSTALS OF DEATH

Dave was looking at the red shiny crystals in his hand and different blurry images started to rush all over his mind. The more he concentrated on what the crystals were showing him the more he was becoming terrified of making even a single move. For a long time now, the story behind the crystals of death was nothing but a myth to him.

Many scientists had devoted their lives to finding these crystals and study them, including himself. Dave could not believe his eyes when he saw them and they managed to put an influence in him. These crystals had been known for their magic like how they could show a person the different ways on how a person could die.

Just when Dave was about to let go of the crystals, a moment from the magical crystals captured his attention. At this moment, he saw himself old like every ordinary man would like to get some day and a beautiful old woman was sitting beside him. The woman was holding his hand gracefully as she leaned closer to him and gave him a kiss on his forehead. He could tell that he was in a hospital bed. The woman moved back to look at him and sang a song while staring at Dave directly in the eyes.

Even though it seemed like a critical moment, Dave felt very secure and happy. It was like he was satisfied with the life that he had lived. While staring at the smile that the woman revealed, he felt his breathe being cut. His soul was finally freed from his old body but even at that moment his lips were curved upwards to reveal a perfect smile.

Carefully put them in that container. You do not want to hold them for long.

The voice of Jack startled Dave from the visions the crystals were showing him. Jack had been Dave's friend for so long that he thought of him as a brother. All the knowledge that Dave had about the crystals was because of Jack. Jack was really inspired to look for them and study them further.

After the last vision, Dave was quite curious to know more about the crystals. That was his excuse so that he could not accept that he was more curious about the woman who was with him in his death bed.

You are quiet! What did it show you?

A lot of bad things!

You need to lay down for a while. Nothing can be exciting about death. Especially when you are seeing more than a million ways of how you may end up dead. Jack insisted.

Dave put the crystals in the well sealed container and they started to head back down the road to get to their car. The crystals had been in the Cave of Colours for millions of years before anyone came across them. With Jack's critical research, they ended up in the cave and found them. The cave was dark and twisted like it was in a form of a maze. Those who entered the cave and were not careful could get lost easily.

On the ground laid several corpse,  scattered bones and skulls. It seems like there have been so many people who had done the same research but were not lucky enough to get out of the cave with the crystals. Just thinking of what might have stopped those people from getting out of the cave made the two men shiver in their own skin. One after the other, they all walked simultaneously while watching their steps.

The cave was dark and after a few minutes, a few bats would fly past their faces going to different directions. Although those bats had made that a habit, the researchers had not yet gotten used to it, after every instance they would find themselves letting out a little scream. Jack and Dave had come to this place with two guards alongside them. Jack was persistent that such crystals were considered precious and a lot of people would be willing to kill just to have them. One guard walked before them and the other walked behind them the entire time.

A few minutes passed while they were all still trying to figure out their way out of the cave and something mysterious happened. The whole place started to shake violently like there was an earthquake. They bent down while covering their heads as they expected the whole place to simply crumble down to the ground.

A minute later the shaking stopped and everything was still in its place. Jack said that he believed that the magical crystals had connections with the cave and that is why the place shook. Dave shook his head and laughed at the comment. He was a scientist and did not believe in magic.

That was why he had accepted to tag along on the whole research travel in the first place. He was eager to study the crystals and give Jack a scientific explanation for why people get visions of their deaths when they touch the crystals. Jack wanted to put his argument across but he thought he heard something.

Ssh! I think I heard something.

All the four men kept quiet and stood to listen if there was someone else in the cave with them. They even thought that it might be someone who had been stranded for a long while there. The cave was completely quiet! They all began to walk again but maintained the silence still. Then they all began hearing whispers from behind them.

It was like a crowd of people was right behind them whispering things that they could not even grasp. They tried to maintain their calmness but later found themselves running towards the exit. Luckily, at this time they could already see a ray of light way ahead of them. Now, the cave was filled with the sound of men gasping for more air as they pushed their bodies to continue with the chase in the dark.

They all ran until they managed to get out of the cave. Just when Dave stepped outside, he realized that the man who was behind him was not with them. He hurriedly stopped Jack and the forward guard from running as he turned back to check inside the cave if he was anywhere close.

Dave's eyes were met with a sight that he will never forget any time soon. The last body guard was about two steps from the exit. His eyes were popping out and kept bulging out after every second. His mouth was completely sealed that he did not make any sound. Behind him was a dark shadow that was huge than human size. It looked like a shadow but had managed to grab the last body guard and was raising him high in the air.

Whatever the thing was, it was satisfied with the message that it had passed to Dave and Jack. It immediately moved back when it saw that its prey was bleeding from the eyes. Suddenly the entrance to the cave collapsed and huge rocks blocked the entrance completely. The three men who saw what had happened, stood deep rooted to the ground and did not dare blink even a single time.

They did not know if they should feel good that they had managed to get out of the cave on time or they should feel guilty for letting one of them be killed right in front of their eyes. The body guard woke from his deep thoughts and tapped Dave and Jack's shoulder. He insisted that it was safer if they were far away from the cave since they had managed to get the crystals. They did not even know for how long they had been running until they got to their car. Dave and Jack sat behind as the guard took charge and drove them home.

Jack noticed that Dave was awfully quiet which was so unlike him. Even in tough moments, Dave relieved his pressure by talking it out. Dave was squeezing himself on the seat and his entire body seemed like it was shaking involuntarily. Jack assumed it was because of how their other guard had died just before their eyes but after a minute he felt like he should ask.

Are you okay?

Dave's thoughts were not even there. He looked like he had not heard a thing when Jack was talking to him. Jack decided to give him some time then he would ask him again. Their research had been successful and he was happy with that but that did not mean that it was easy. 

Just when Jack was thinking of closing his eyes for a bit to rest, at least until they got home, Dave mumbled something and he did not hear it clearly. Jack sat down upright and found Dave staring back at him.

What?

The crystals are really magical! They do know the future and how everyone is going to die.

What do you mean... you need to just relax first.

The first time I touched the crystal, it showed me what just happened to that poor man only that this time we did not die with him. If we had dared to save him then we could have all died...or at least I am sure I could have!

The car became silent for a moment. Everyone was trying to take in the fact that Dave had just spilled for them. He, himself seemed like he was struggling to accept the facts yet he was the one who had seen the visions. Jack stared outside the window while the driver did his best to focus on the road. They all were holding their breathes hoping that Dave had not been shown that they were going to die on the road. Jack was excited that he had proof that the crystals were working just as he had expected.

However, he knew that his friend was going crazy because he had not been completely honest with him. From the first day that he mentioned the crystals to Dave, he only told him that he knew that the crystals would show a person their death but the truth was that every person had several instances of death.

Relax, we are going...

I cannot relax. If we were supposed to die at that moment and we have escaped death then that means that we have exploited the power of the crystals and there shall be consequences.

That is what I want to explain to you. Every person has several instances of death and they are all dependent on the choices you make. The crystals only show instances of death and not the ones when you make choices that make death go far from where a person is. We just made the right choice.

Now that Jack had explained further about the crystals, Dave got as better understanding on how they work. It was a little comforting to know that he had not done anything to upset nature. The balance was not disturbed. 

In all the vision that Dave saw about most of the instances on how he could die, he saw himself die young and unhappy in almost all of them except one that caught his attention. The last vision gave him hope. He died old and happy and a beautiful woman who seemed like she loved him so much was right by his side. It was his dream to grow old, have a family and be happy but because of his work he had not thought deeply about it.

It was difficult to keep working and researching and still want to look for a life partner. From what he was seeing from his friends, none of their wives could be patient with a man with a busy schedule like his. Perhaps that is why most of his colleagues were divorced.

Despite that, Dave had gotten hope from the magical crystals of death. They had shown him that if he continued to prioritize only his work then he was going to die young and unhappy. This made Dave make his mission to find the lady in his vision and love her in all the ways he could. This was the path he was going to follow. A path of love.

As soon as the two men got to the city they were relieved. Their project was coming along quite well since the hardest part was already done. The crystals were at their disposal and the remaining part was easy. Dave remembered to have seen the lady of his dreams in the Northern side of Acacia Town. He did not mind going there every time he was free to look for her. The best part about being a scientist is that they got to work at their own time.

One evening, Dave was not feeling like working. He excused himself and drove to North of Acacia. The roads were quiet and a few people were walking, going home from work. After a long drive, Dave decided to stop at a certain restaurant and buy a take away meal. He was shy of eating in a restaurant while alone. His plan was to park his car in this executive restaurant's parking lot, buy something and come back to his car and go back home.

Just when he was thinking of getting out of his car, a lady jumped in the passengers seat out of no where. Dave was confused but this did not stop the lady from continuously shouting at him.

Drive!  Please just drive!

She was pleading and shouting at the same time. From the rear view mirror, Dave could see a gang of huge and well built men running towards his car.

The lady next to her was shivering and sweating on her back and forehead. Just when the men got a little close to the car, Dave instinctively drove away.

After a minute of fast speeding on the high way, the lady sighed a sigh of relief and laid back to relax. She glanced severally at Dave before she turned to look away on the window. Dave could not tell if she was shy or just avoiding him so that he would not be questioned.

Stop the car! I will be fine here.

I cannot stop, it's in the middle of the highway, can't you see that?

In a way this lady was annoying Dave. He could not help himself from wondering how such a lovely lady would get involved with a gang. Dave had always been judgmental against such people. His belief was that people should avoid trouble and women... Well, women should be humble and polite. Dave had not gotten a chance to look at her well.

Please find a way to turn around, this route only leads to out of town.

Where do you stay?  I can drive you there directly.

An eerie silence reigned the car when he mentioned where she was staying. She did not dare utter a word. After a few minutes, Dave found a way to turn back and take her to North Acacia Town where he had found her. He was trying to avoid being caught up in the midst of all the trouble the young lady seemed to have get herself into. When she noticed Dave had began being curious about her, she became quiet and never said anything else. Soon, they were at the entrance of the restaurant again. 

Can you at least tell me why they were chasing you?

She stared blankly at Dave as he asked her that. Earlier, Dave felt like it was okay for her to be protective of herself and not say where she lives. But with time he was feeling she owed her at least an explanation for rescuing her from the gang. When their eyes met, she leaned closer to Dave's ear, whispered a thank you and gave him a peck before alighting the car. She looked back to close the door behind her and saw how dazzled she had left Dave.

What she did not know was that Dave was actually shocked because of something else. This was the only time, Dave had gotten to see her face. It was familiar to him. She was the lady he had seen from the visions of the crystals. Dave was so shocked that he could barely get a word out of his mouth. His mouth curved upwards to form a perfect smile. He then hurriedly got out of the car and tried to follow the lady but she had vanished into thin air.

He felt a little disappointed but was happy to have seen her. This increased his faith in the future that he had seen in the crystals. He got back in his car and went home to rest. A few weeks passed and he had not heard anything or even bumped into the beautiful lady again. Dave blamed himself for not being more persistent on getting her name. All this time, he had not told Jack anything.
