CHAPTER 1
On the Road Again
Oh my gosh, seriously? Spiders again? Can’t you think of a more interesting first scene?
Lyra rolled her eyes.
The spider pouted. He just performed his best scary surprise jump out of the savanna grass, hissing and waving his hairy legs menacingly. But this villager didn’t seem to care at all! He tried not to take it personally. No doubt she would care when he gobbled her up and left behind nothing but a little pile of loot.
Raaaawr,
he screeched, lunging toward—wait a second. Where did this villager get a bow? And a sword? And...oh no. The villager is flying!? What are they feeding villagers these days? Swearing never to mess with villagers again, the spider galloped away as quickly as his eight legs could carry him.
Lyra landed back on the ground, panting slightly as the silky elytra wings on her back returned to the shape of a cloak. She wrinkled her nose and frowned in the direction of the fleeing spider, running calculations in her head. It took her two seconds to equip her elytra wings, four seconds to sprint up the nearest hill, and one second to backflip into the air and take flight, but she was still too slow to turn that spider into a kebab. If she practiced drawing her bowstring while running, maybe next time she would be fast enough to land the perfect upside-down gliding bow kill.
Teddy, Lyra’s pet wolf, squinted his furry eyebrows at her and gave a tiny snort.
"Yes, Teddy, I know it was just one little spider. But what if an enderman had ambushed us instead? I’m not being extra; I’m just being prepared. Despite her bold words, she cringed a little. She was definitely being extra, but how could she resist when it was just so much fun?
Besides, it’s pointless; I still can’t hit anything with my bow. We sure scared that spider though!"
The cheerful savanna sun beat down on Lyra as she took one last glance over her shoulder in the direction of her village, Chunk 44-12. The only part still visible in the distance was the very tip-top of the tallest house. The first time she left home to go adventuring, it took her hours to travel this far. Today she covered the same ground in a few minutes, hopping easily up the blocky hillsides and gliding between high points with her elytra wings. Her inventory overflowed with rabbit stew and fresh pies, and her heart overflowed with confidence. Possibly a little bit too much confidence. She wasn’t a runaway anymore; she was an adventurer.
Lyra earned the title of adventurer with a lot of hard work and courage. Just a few days ago, she and her friends liberated all the world’s missing emeralds from Luther, an evil adventurer who stole them for himself. She cured his zombie villager slaves and sent them to all the villages in Blockseed 3, so that they could trade emeralds to the struggling villagers. She proudly returned the final emerald to her own family, inspiring them to rebuild Chunk 44-12’s trading hall.
Lyra planned to take a nice, long rest before rejoining her friends in pursuit of Luther, but, after everything she had seen and done, she got bored of sitting around the village in about three seconds. Her parents were sad to see her leave again, but they understood that Lyra needed to meet her good friend Frank and search out Luther’s hiding spot. Not only did Luther need to be punished for his crimes, but he also held a mysterious clue to the location of Lyra’s missing brother, Brendan. She swore not to rest until she found him and got that clue.
Lyra and Frank had agreed to meet in the adventurer town of Misty Peak. The first time Lyra and Frank traveled to Misty Peak, they followed a wandering path over mountains and through deserts, following a map that marked the location of Luther’s emerald mines. Since this wasn’t necessary anymore, Lyra headed straight toward the main road that adventurers built many years ago. It followed the flattest, most convenient route through the countryside straight to Misty Peak. The sun sparkled on her head as she marveled at the speed and ease of this path. Maybe nothing will go wrong on this adventure, she thought. She had no idea how badly she just jinxed herself.
As she trotted along, she thought about her other friends: Sir Mort the skeleton king, Frank’s student Kyle, and Treasure Guy, who was hopelessly addicted to loot. Someday she would go to Frank’s adventurer school and see them all again, but for now, she and Frank had agreed to meet at Luther’s old house in Misty Peak. If they wasted too much time, they might not be able to pick up Luther’s trail.
The cobblestone road ran straight as an arrow across biome after biome of gentle, green fields. Bees buzzed from flower to flower, and in the distance, she spotted pigs and cows grazing happily. She even saw some gardens and little country houses surrounded by workshops.
Why does anyone ever go to the mountains or the desert?
she asked Teddy. Temperate biomes are where it’s at. I hope I never have to be too hot or too cold again.
Unbeknownst to her, Lyra’s jinx counter ticked up another notch.
Lyra was just thinking she hoped she didn’t meet any weird people on this trip when her thoughts were interrupted by a rustling sound in the grass behind her. She spun around, hand on her bow. She might be rad enough to do flying backflips, but she was the only archer in the world who couldn’t hit anything, so she was jumpy. Boring, unthreatening trees and bushes stood perfectly still behind her as if to say, Who, me? Rustle? Of course not.
But anything could be creeping behind them, spying on her.
Hello?
she called out, cautiously.
A mischievous breeze tugged at her hair, but nothing else moved. Teddy’s ears stayed in a relaxed position as if he didn’t hear anything. Annoyed at her own jumpiness, Lyra stomped off down the road. Throughout the rest of the day, that occasional, sneaky rustling followed her, but she ignored it. Adventurers passed by on the road, strolling casually like they didn’t care about anything else in the world. She tried to imitate them.
As night fell, Lyra chose an isolated clearing to camp in. She didn’t quite trust that other adventurers would not break into her house and rob her in the dark. It was the first time she had camped alone. She thought it would be exciting, but the silence got heavier and heavier until it made her uncomfortable. Hitting trees to gather sticks for a fire sounded deafening, probably alerting every mob in the countryside.
Trying to ignore the loneliness, she lit a fire and cuddled with Teddy on a log, staring into the orange flames. She balanced a delicious pie on her knees and chowed it down with the little spoon her mom packed for her. Teddy spat his pie out and whimpered until she gave him bits of rabbit from the stew instead. Chewing thoughtfully, she pondered how best to build her shelter. Frank always found them an existing house to patch up, so she had never built a place of her own before.
Lyra nearly dropped her pie in the dirt when she heard the sound of a twig snapping right behind her. She spun around, squinting into the dark trees. No light, no sound, no movement. This time even Teddy’s ears were pricked, but he was more concerned with his dinner than the sound. Maybe the heat of the fire just cracked a piece of wood.
Trying to calm her breathing, Lyra got to work stacking a few stone blocks on the ground. She kept getting confused about how far apart to put the walls, or how tall to make
