AWAKENING
Awakening from a deep slumber, Lilith finds herself in a place unlike any other. The air was still, cold and frigid on the skin, yet warm and humid, with each breath burring ones’ lungs. There was darkness as far as the eyes could see, a shade of Vantablack. Yet somehow there was light, for Lilith could see this darkness and herself, but nothing more.
The absence of sound filled the air. The silence echoed in the mind. To many, it would be a void, absent of life, but to her, it was known as the darkness, for that’s all she knew. For many, this darkness was enough to drive them to the point of insanity, but for Lilith, this was the least of her problems.
For within the darkness, Lilith found herself strapped to a table. The table was made of what seemed to be stone and was filled with inscriptions, almost like a tablet, however the language
was unknown to her. The bindings were equally as strange, neither leather nor metal, but rather they were made of light.
Struggled as Lilith may, but she could not break them. She was trapped, trapped within this new found darkness with no escape. Realizing this she screamed for help, but no one would come. As time passed, no one came, neither captor nor rescuer; Lilith was all alone.
Days quickly turned into what felt like years, for in this solitude there was an absence of time. Each night that she cried herself to sleep, she saw nothing but darkness and felt nothing but despair.
Every night Lilith closed her eyes, hoping for a change, but whenever she opened them, she saw the same darkness and hopelessness that she had come to know. This carried on until one day she closed her eyes, and when she opened them this time, she saw something different. She saw a bright blue sky high above with whispers of clouds painted across the horizon.
Accompanying it below was a beautiful meadow, teeming with flowers and evergreen trees, lush and vibrant. Along with it ran a river so peaceful that music seemed to flow through it.
She could feel the peacefulness of the air around her and could smell the flowers. She could feel the breeze blowing through her crimson-red hair and feel the sun kissing her face, its rays, as golden as her skin.
Amazed at this sight, she tried to move but realized she still couldn't. She tried to scream, but this time no sound would come out. Terrified, Lilith realized she could only move her head and eyes, nothing more. For years, Lilith woke up each day trapped, engulfed in darkness, not knowing if she was dead or alive, but now she could see the outside world.
It was pleasing and peaceful yet dark and depressing, as she was trapped and lost in her own prison. She longed for an escape, a chance to be free. She was afraid that she would be lost forever in this place, able to see the outside but not feel or touch it. Her
thirst for human contact slowly grew more and more into a need. A need that she could not wash away.
Lilith lied there as tears filled her eyes, wishing for someone, anyone, to come and save her from this darkness. She prayed and begged for her Creator to save her and take her back into their embrace to free her from this prison, but to no avail.
Suddenly, a light appeared. The light was so bright that it grew and grew, tearing through the darkness, blinding Lilith in the process. It was as if a door had opened before her, and the light filled her surroundings and her with its warmth.
As Lilith’s eyes began to readjust, within the light she saw what appeared to be human figures with a shadowy figure behind them, but she could not make out who or even what it was. Seeing her opportunity, Lilith cried out to them, but still no sound came out. She then noticed the figures walking towards her as they began to kneel down by her side to comfort her.
They began to question if she was still alive or if she had gone to another place after death. A question she asked herself every night. Suddenly, the shadowy figure spoke.
I will return for you soon
it said, and within a flash they disappeared.
Blinding was the
