    INTRODUCTION

T his book is presented in very clear thoughts and simple words only to create the interest to know reality for those people who desire to find a Perfect Living Master. A Perfect Living Master is a Master who can take the soul directly to the region of absolute truth (real home.)

The holy books which are read by the people of the world tell why spiritual practice should be done and why such practice is necessary for human beings. Everyone, on some level knows that yoga (union) between soul and mind, body and soul and between God and man is present within every human being. Yet somehow man has forgotten this union of body, soul, mind and God and he has lost his spiritual power. Man’s present miserable condition and the high status awaiting him, if only he were to follow the right path, are the subjects of this book. Human beings as well as all other living entities are endowed with soul and mind in addition to the gross physical body. The bestower of these gifts is the Lord, who is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient. Man is the microcosm which reflects the macrocosm. The supreme soul is in the individual soul. The Perfect Living Master or Guru pervades the macrocosm through the sound current. This sound current cannot be experienced by the physical senses of living beings.

To know the secret of the eternal sky and to visualize reality directly, it is necessary to follow the path of spiritual Masters who can cut the fetters off the feet and free the captive forever. In this way man is able to see the reality within. He meets God face to face with the grace of his Guru. The fog of doubt and superstition burns and bursts and the mind becomes illumined.

Then, man finds the yoga of bliss within. The Perfect Living Guru makes his devotees able to enjoy the eternal yoga of bliss. So this book is written only in the footsteps of the spiritual Masters. These Perfect Masters, in age after age have written and explained how a living contemporary Guru is essential for spiritual enlightenment. In this age, Kali Yuga (Iron Age) only the sound current yoga practice can give salvation and man can daily die while he is alive. Yoga is the word which soothes the mind and soul.

    CHAPTER I

    TRISHUL YOGA

    1) Ancient Yoga or Vedic Period or Golden Age, the Sat Yuga.

    2) Modern Yoga or Treta Yuga (Silver age), Dwapar yuga or Copper age and Kali Yuga, the Iron age.

    3) Vedic Yoga is found in the teachings of the Vedas; the holy four books according to the sage Ved-Vyas. This yoga is replete with the detailed study of yogic rituals and ceremonies that helped to surpass the limitations of the human mind.

T he people believed in rishis and yogis, seers and sages during that period of Vedic history. Yogis who were simple in living and who had high thoughts of wisdom and the science of spirituality were in abundance. The hermits, seers, sages, yogis and rishis or whatever you may call a spiritual man were living in the lap of nature in their huts and cottages in the open forests. Their food was fruits and vegetables. They were drinking water from running springs and rivers flowing down from the mountains. These spiritual men were also gifted with the ability to see the ultimate reality through their spiritual practice of yogic meditation.

From the Vedas, books like the Upanishads and Puranas were formed by these wise men. This is called Pre-Classic Yoga. The Upanishads explain the inner vision and reality of devotion to the Lord Brahma. The teachings of the Upanishads make the study of the Vedas comprehensible.

Through yogic meditation, Lord Gautama Buddha was enlightened at the age of thirty five. So Buddha was the latest well known proponent of this path to enlightenment. Buddha proved that yogic meditation can facilitate the approach to God. Then the classic period of yogic meditation gives us details of the Yoga Sutra written by the sage Patanjali in the second century. The Yoga-Sutra is the thread connecting the eight fold path of yoga. In this age of Kali Yuga the Yoga Sutra is not a very popular form of yoga but some samadhi sages still practice it. These yogis gain physical yoga, mental yoga and divine yoga. But according to the Perfect Living Masters of the Sant-Mat path, such austere practices are not suited for the seekers of this age. As the ages change, the sources of achieving the spiritual goal of life also change. These Masters guide the people of each age according to their modes of life.

So it is that we first see the classic yoga which is called the eight fold path or the eight limbs of classic yoga and it is the yoga of attention on the sound or Surat Shabad yoga that is appropriate for this age of Kali Yuga.

The Elements of the Eight Fold Path

I Yama: Ethical values of man.

II Niyama: Personal observation of yoga.

III Asanas: Physical practice of yoga.

IV Pratyahara: Withdrawal of physical sense perceptions in preparation for meditation on God.

V Pranayam: Breath control and speed.

    VI Dharana: Concentration.

VII Dhyana: Focusing the mind within.

    VIII Samadhi: Ecstasy.

According to the ancient science of divine yoga, spirit and matter are tied in a knot. This is the spiritual knowledge which came from the true practitioners of meditation yoga’s in ancient times and these knots were delineated into three primary classes.

The knots present as dual phenomena present within human beings and are:

    1) The knot of matter and spirit

    2) The knot of mind and soul

    3) The knot of Prakriti and Purusha

These three classes of knots all have the same meaning but words are used to clarify the meanings. According to the yoga practitioners of old, these knots (which are in reality, one knot) manifest in the physical body between the two eyes and is called the third eye center or the Shiva Netra. The Radha Soami, Sant Mat Masters of this age have given this area in the human head the name; Tisra Til.

Prakriti and Purusha (spiritual nature and man) form a knot that can be disentangled by purifying the spirit through the crucible of matter. This purification is effected, according to the classical yoga of the Vedic tradition, by the aforementioned eight fold path. The union of body and spirit is ultimately achieved through meditation on God.

An important consideration at this point is the question; What is pranayama (or pranayam) in a rishi’s life? Pranayam is the exercise of breath control or breathing exercises in practical yoga. The yogic exercise of breath control works in the body, supplying oxygen to the various organs in a proper way. It should be done in the open air. According to the yogis and rishis, pranayam is the combination of the science and techniques that exist in different traditions.

    These techniques include:

    1) High Breathing

    2) Low Breathing

    3) Middle Breathing

    4) Complete Breathing

    5) Pausing -Intervals between breaths

At the time before meditation, apply the first four techniques as they make the mind fresh and the body active. The mind is ready to go within.

Then the pause of breath comes, completing the cycle
