Hello: Hello series, #1

On or about 6th of June 2021 the world woke up to startling news. The fabled story of decuplets births in South Africa, the so-called Thembisa 10 that went viral globally. This piece of news succeeded to break international headlines where many had failed. Many South Africans were talking from excitement, some out of incredulity yet, others welcomed the news as relief from COVID-19 deaths. After ten days no one could locate the newborns, it became  apparent that this was a hoax. Noise faded; attention was taken up by other worldly concerns. In the midst of that euphoria, I alerted the media that the woman linked to the fake decuplets births was the same person responsible for a similar but less dramatic disappearance of a set of triplets born three years earlier. Immediately, the faked decuplets story triggered a new frenzy – there was baby trade ring run from inside South Africa's public hospitals. The disappearance of the triplets, however, did not grab media attention as much as the decuplets news largely because the story was regarded old news. Hello is telling the story beyond the headlines of the disappearance of the triplets. A novel has the ability to communicate lucidly and engage readers in an intelligent way. In telling the story of the three little Hebrew children, my duty was not to replicate the traumatic events I had intimately witnessed. Rather, as a  novelist I transmute history, metabolising it into the human details that constituted the selfhood of the characters.
