    Preface

    Serendipity and Historical Research

I have always been fascinated by Colorado’s history. My interest in architectural history began when my wife and I moved into a William Lang-designed house in Denver in the 1980s. It seemed clear that our face block was threatened by inappropriate development—metastasis from nearby medical institutions if you will. Our house was already listed on the National Register. It occurred to me that if I got our face block designated as a historic district this would provide some protection as well as possible tax breaks for my neighbors. At the time I had no credentials with the historic preservation community and my inquiries were greeted with some degree of skepticism. I documented that the work of five founding members of the Colorado Chapter of the American Institute of Architects was represented in my block. The two buildings next door to my home were designed by the architect Henry Dozier about whom nothing was known. I worked to develop his biography using tools that were available to me in the 1980s. I lost Dozier’s trail thru history in the mid-1890s. Studies such as this one need to be understood in a historical context. Because the Silver Panic of 1893 had such a devastating effect in Colorado, I presumed that he was dead or had left the state never to be seen again.

Serendipity. One day I picked up a copy of a magazine called Americana. It flipped open to an article on the town of Skagway, Alaska, which had been designed by Henry Dozier. Skagway is a part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. The National Park Service representatives didn’t know that he came from
