Laurel's husband Bob insists that Laurel and their three little boys move from Boston to the wealthy, isolated town of Northington, despite the fact that they can barely afford a home in the exclusive suburb. Laurel and the boys struggle to fit in with the more affluent locals. As a result, Bob and Laurel's relationship becomes increasingly miserable and contentious, and Laurel begins to lose hope of ever getting out of Northington. When Bob is found dead under very unusual circumstances, Laurel is indicted for murder.

 

Enter Catherine (Cat) Carroll, a reporter assigned to cover the trial of her high school classmate. Cat believes that Laurel is guilty and is determined to get to the truth. She employs the help of her rival and on-again off-again boyfriend Jack Heggarty. (275 pages)
