History of Boats
Historical Overview
The history of boats spans millennia, with the development of watercraft being essential for human progress and exploration. Boats played a significant role in the evolution of civilizations, facilitating trade, cultural exchange, and the exploration of new lands. This chapter delves into the history of boats in India and other parts of the world, exploring ancient texts that mention their presence, the design and materials used in boat construction at different stages of history, the social advancements caused by boats, and the disruptions caused by invasions and conquests that led to the eradication of cultures and civilizations.
The Earliest Mariners
The history of boats dates back thousands of years, and it is impossible to call any culture the inventor of boats. I believe that during floods in the ancient times, it occurred naturally to our ancestors to hang on to floating logs and collective reeds for keeping afloat, hence they discovered that they can use wood or reed to make rafts for transporting in water, which later evolved to boats of different shapes and sizes.
The most basic form of boat made by humans is a raft made by tying together several logs of wood. It has been used by almost all cultures over the history and is still used in various places where options are limited. Dugout canoe is another old design that was made by digging the inside of a large bark of tree to give it the shape of a leak-proof boat. Another oldest known form of boat is reed boat that was made by knitting together the dried long strands of special types of grass suitable for the purpose. After knitting the boats into various shapes as per requirement, their surface was sealed by using various natural compounds found from the trees in the region.
Early History of Boats and Design
Boats in Ancient Texts
Ancient texts from different parts of the world mention the existence of boats, providing evidence of their long history.
In India, the Rig-Veda, one of the oldest sacred texts (almost 3500 years old), though does not talk about boats in a direct way, but the text gives an insight that water transport was already known to the people.
The Mahabharata written by ‘Vedvyasa’ consists around 100000 verses is known to be the world’s longest epic poem, surpassing the length of Iliad and Odyssey combined, tells about a great battle happened over right and wrong (2800-2900 years ago). Though not in the main battle, but several times in the story, there are references of maritime trade and travels.
Ramayana written by Valmiki, which is known to be older that Mahabharata also has a story where a boatman (Kevat) takes Ram, Sita and Laxman across a river on two occasions.
In Mesopotamia, Epic of Gilgamesh
: The famous epic mentions the use of boats in its narrative. In Tablet XI of the epic, Gilgamesh encounters a boatman named Urshanabi, who helps him cross the Waters of Death to reach Utnapishtim, the survivor of the Great Flood.
Code of Hammurabi
: While not primarily focused on boats and maritime matters, this legal code does contain some provisions regarding issues arising from shipping and commercial transactions conducted using boats.
Some Sumerian poems and hymns praise the river and its importance for trade and travel. They often depict boats as essential tools for commerce and connecting different regions. They used reed boats for transportation along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Nile River played a very important role in Egyptian history as it brought prosperity for centuries.
Among the major Egyptian Gods, ‘Amun’ and ‘Ra’, while Amun is the Sun, Ra is the river, which tells about the importance of river in that time, hence it is safe to say that ancient Egyptians used boats to benefit from the river. Ancient Egyptian texts and symbols inscribed on pyramids, coffins and temple walls have been deciphered to also mention boats which must have been used for travel and trade along the Nile River since it is the major river in the region.
In china ‘Shijing’ the collection of ancient Chinese poems, dating back to the Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BCE), includes verses that mention boats and sailing, particularly in poems related to traveling on rivers and lakes.
Early Boat Construction
Early boats were typically made from natural materials available locally. Reed boats were common in regions with abundant reeds, while wooden boats were constructed using timber from local forests. Ancient boat designs often focused on simplicity and ease of construction, making them suitable for specific waterways and coastal regions.
Social Advancements Caused by Boats
Trade and Cultural Exchange
Boats revolutionized trade by enabling the transportation of goods over long distances. Maritime trade networks connected civilizations, fostering cultural exchange and sharing of knowledge, art, and technology. The Silk Road and the Spice Route facilitated exchanges between Asia and other parts of the world, promoting economic prosperity and cross-cultural interactions.
Exploration and Discoveries
The human evolution theory states that human species started from Africa and spread all over the world. If we consider the breakup of Gondwana into various continents into the continents as we know today, it happened several millions of years ago, which easily predates the birth of first human in Africa which proves that no human could have reached the Australian and American landmasses on foot. The presence of natives in Americas and Australian lands before their discovery by Europeans since 15th century AD clearly states that either humans crossed vast oceans way before known history, or birth of humans predates the breakup of Gondwana.
Boats played a pivotal role in exploration, leading to the discovery of new lands and civilizations. Ancient sailors, motivated by curiosity and the pursuit of wealth, ventured into the unknown, mapping coastlines and establishing trade routes. These voyages expanded the horizons of human
