- Fidel Castro
Introduction
Fidel Castro. Depending on whom you ask, the name can inspire revulsion, hatred, admiration, incredulity, awe, fear, or even love. His story is one that has changed the course of the history of the world and the face of the island of Cuba.
From his humble beginnings as a Santiago schoolboy through his days as a rebellious young lawyer, into the hard fight of the Cuban Revolution, and in the defiance of his decades as president of Cuba, Fidel Castro's every action was marked with passion. In love, in politics, and in war, he was an intellectual whose incredible mind was balanced by a tendency to feel lust, anger, and determination on an unprecedented scale.
Castro is well-known in the capitalist world as being an opponent of the U. S., a blemish on the face of the free world, and a tyrannical dictator. Yet a little digging reveals that there is more to the man than meets the eye. The world saw a tyrant in olive green fatigues, but in this book, make sure to hear the story of the man behind those burning eyes. Hear the story of a boy who wrote a letter to an American president asking for ten dollars, a man who once delivered a four-hour speech from memory, a soldier who led an army of 19 against a force of 20,000 and won, a dictator whose puny island stood against all the might of the United States of America, and a historical figure who left behind one of only five communist nations in the world.
Castro was more than just a politician. His is a story that involves heroic voyages through turbulent oceans, affairs with young women from all over the world, spies, assassins, betrayal, conquest, riots, and battles. He was controversial, inimitable, cruel, courageous, stubborn, disrespectful of human rights, and utterly indomitable. But most of all, he never gave up. And this is his story.
Chapter 1 – An Unlikely Leader
Tongue poking out in concentration, the teenager bent laboriously over the paper, writing with a painstakingly slow and tidy script.
My good friend Roosvelt,
I don't know very English, but I know as much as write to you...
He paused, tapping his pen on the paper, wondering what to say next. How did one address the president of the United States, anyway? He decided to congratulate the president on his reelection, although he didn't know the English word for term
and used the Spanish one—periodo—instead. Getting enthusiastic now, he added a request for a ten-dollar bill green american,
because he had never seen one before. The Cuban pesos of the 1940s were all blue or gray; the idea of money being green was new and puzzling, and besides, American dollars were worth a lot in Cuba in those days. He wrote down his address so that President Roosevelt would know where to send the desired bill. He was pretty sure that much of the last paragraph was in faltering English.
I don't know very English, he apologized, but felt he still had to defend his pride a
