Chapter 1
A crisp Alpine breeze ruffled through Vudswana Tulip’s long honey-blonde hair as she arranged the storefront display table with the latest bookstore arrivals. Breathtaking mountain vistas surrounded the quaint centre of Edelweiss village, where locals mingled this sunny Saturday afternoon.
That travel guide will go quickly once the tourists start packing our streets again,
Vudswana’s coworker Ida remarked, watering an assortment of potted roses near the entrance. Summer is right around the corner it seems!
Yes, I noticed the passes are almost all clear of snow now,
Vudswana replied happily, loving the cosy community she called home. She finished stacking coffee table books extolling the beauty of Switzerland’s landscapes. One glorious panorama after another reflected the soaring, craggy grandeur just outside town.
The Golden Eagle bookshop attracted literature aficionados from across Europe willing to wind along vertiginous cliffs to reach this hidden gem. Vudswana delighted in sharing her passion for books with both locals and world travellers. Though quirky spinster Ida could get on her nerves at times, Vudswana enjoyed their usual Saturday shift routine.
A flash of colour near the peaks caught Vudswana’s eye as paragliders took advantage of the calm weather over the valley enclosing Edelweiss. Vudswana gazed up dreamily as the paintings adorning her walls leapt into her imagination in vivid detail at the sight...

she exclaimed with a gasp.
Vudswana whirled to follow her coworker’s stare, instantly recognizing the man strolling confidently towards their store. Though he wore dark aviator sunglasses, his strong jawline and full lips belonged on a magazine cover. Broad-shouldered and imposing in black leather and jeans, the newcomer turned every female head on the street as he passed cafes and boutiques making up Edelweiss’s quirky commercial promenade.
Surely you know everyone who lives here Ida,
Vudswana murmured, feeling an unexpected flutter in her chest as the attractive stranger approached their door. We rarely get visitors this time of year.
Well he certainly spices up the view, that’s for sure,
Ida whispered back in delight as the chimes above the entrance announced the man’s arrival.
Up close, he looked even taller and more powerfully built than Vudswana first assumed. Feeling suddenly self-conscious in her fluffy Angora sweater and long peasant skirt, she tried to appear nonchalant as his gaze swept over the displays she had so carefully arranged.
Finally, in a smooth baritone that sent involuntary tingles down her arms, the handsome visitor spoke.
Hello there, sorry to interrupt,
he began, nodding politely to Vudswana and then Ida. "I was wondering
