The Great Pueblo Revolt of 1996

There was a Pueblo revolt in 1680 against the Spaniards in New Mexico. This was due to a number of factors, most notabely the suppression of the native americans to spanish rule and religion.

 

The spanish reconquered but gave the Pueblos a lot of leeway which later led to the tribes getting preferred treatment by the United States. Some tribes today have a self-governance agreement with the United States, but the US Government acts as a trust executor for the Tribe's lands and fetters the tribes with laws, rules and regulations. A number of Tribes/Pueblos in the state of New Mexico have casinos and other business enterprises to generate revenue for the Pueblo/Tribe. These casinos require an agreement with the State for revenue sharing.

 

This book gives vignettes (stories) of the Pueblo of San Ildefonso quest to be free from the United States Government interference in their religion, their culture, land and lives.

 

While Pueblo de San Ildefonso is adjoining Los Alamos National Laboratory, nothing in these vignettes references the Cassandra Project, nor are the vignettes from the Cassandra Project.
