About the Author
FOREWORD
When I began writing the first novel in the Watcher Series, it was 1996 and I had just called off my wedding (only six weeks before it happened—but don’t worry, I found my Prince Charming four years later). Consequently, I was in this weird emotional state. Writing became my refuge. I didn’t write the whole book then, but I did write several scenes, picked a lot of the character names, and laid out the blueprint for my novel. It was a place for me to retreat.
I was teaching English for high school juniors and chose to make my protagonist that age. Since she didn’t have tons of life experience to draw on, I used the literature I was teaching in my class for my character to use too.
Two years prior to this, I had graduated with my degree in English, so mythology and literature were fresh on my mind. Works like Paradise Lost, The Book of Enoch, Dracula, and The Tempest kept me company in the quiet hours. I also had a friend introduce me to the old, cult classic film, Highlander (Thanks, Brooke). This, combined with The Book of Enoch, sparked my ideas for my Watchers. (No, it wasn’t Buffy. This was before the show ever aired. But we did use a lot of the same source material.)
In late 2008, I went back to what I had written again and toyed around for a long time. But it wasn’t until a student saw my manuscript sitting on a table and asked if she could read it that things got real. I nervously let her, dying a little bit inside. Then, she did the most magical thing—she asked if she could take it home to finish reading. It spurred me on, and I have never looked back.
The series is still a refuge, and recently, going back to it was like going home. Is it weird that the characters are so real to me?
Anyway, thanks for being a fan. This is for you.
(If you are still sitting there wondering which scenes I wrote in 1996, they are: coffee shop rescue, locker slut, apartment attack, caged, and blink yes or no. Plus, there are a first two chapters that will never, ever be seen. Like ever.)
Doubt that the stars are fire;
Doubt that the sun doth move;
Doubt truth to be a liar;
But never doubt I love.
—Shakespeare
Slayer Tattoo1
THE SLAYER TATTOO
All Slayers have a tattoo somewhere on their bodies. Gabriel sports his on his left forearm, Uriel on her right shoulder blade, and Kez on his entire back.

WATCHER HIERARCHICAL STRUCTURE
A friend of mine, who is a very visual person, asked me to sketch out how the Concilium works. Therefore, I give you the flow of power within the Concilium.
Additionally, you can see who belongs to each side.

THE ORIGINAL PROLOGUE FROM THE UNINTENDED
259 BC, Northern Europe, Celtic-held territory
Staying here any longer is lunacy,
he murmured, as a bitter wind clawed at them. You pushed them too far,
he said, looking over the balcony. Hundreds of torches snaked down the hillside towards the castle, a blaze of color in the midnight.
I will handle this,
she replied coldly.
It’s all a game to you, isn’t it?
he asked, his voice tinged with disappointment.
Isn’t that what life is? Plotting a course, calculating the risks, and maneuvering for the advantage?
When the epiphany hit, agony seized him. He stood in silence for a few long moments, his shoulders heavy with his revelation. "I have only been a game to you—an obligation."
She looked startled and tore her eyes away from the approaching crowd. No, of course not,
she insisted, as she turned and ran her fingers through his long blond hair before affectionately resting them on his chest.
He gripped her wrists, removed her hands firmly, and placed them at her sides. Don’t lie to me. I can read you too well.
Belenus, I was born to be your wife.
Well phrased, always the politician.
This is what I was raised to be,
she pouted, her calm a little shaken.
He let out a humorless chuckle. That’s right. You are the victim of your upbringing. You never embraced it.
The noise of the mob finally reached them and started to bounce off the stone walls. They listened as the crowd reached the outer gate. The iron clattered and groaned from the pounding.
He turned to her and said, We should go.
I’m not going anywhere—the guard will quell them.
Even the guard cannot withstand this, vampires or not. You will sacrifice them for nothing.
It is their job to die for me.
"Please come with me."
Leave if you wish. I will not begrudge you.
He turned to depart, but stopped at the door. He placed his hand on both sides of the frame and leaned there for a moment. He spoke with his back to her. I loved you, you know.
I know,
she replied softly, with some tenderness in her tone, though she did not reciprocate the sentiment.
He closed his eyes, choking back bile, knowing that everything he had believed about her was false. Goodbye,
he whispered hoarsely, aware they would be his last words to her.
Within seconds, he traversed the passageways to the hidden entrance of the catacombs. He slid aside the seemingly immovable stone with ease, lit a torch, and stepped into the blackness. As he replaced the stone, he heard the horrific clamor of the inner gate giving way, the splintering of wood, and the cries of pain. With sadness, he disappeared, never looking back.

BOWEN: INTOLERABLE
HAS BOWEN ALWAYS RESENTED HIS BROTHER?
A Bowen & Tyran Reunion
Europe, 1664
BOWEN’S POINT OF VIEW
Bowen sighed. Why have you come here, Brother?
You neglected to say farewell,
Tyran replied flatly.
It has been well over a year. Why now?
Bowen inquired, though clearly not surprised to see his kin.
Tyran pursed his lips and sat on the balcony overlooking the city street. Black smoke puffed from the oil lamps lining the cobblestone lane. The few people brave enough to venture into the streets were drunkards heading home or ladies of ill-repute selling their wares.
"And how is Maman (Mother)?" Bowen finally asked, after the silence had stretched into the darkness.
Tyran grinned over at Bowen, Intolerable. As always.
Tyran stretched his long legs out in front of him. But what could you really expect? Her favorite son slipped out in the middle of the night without a word.
"I am not her favorite, and I did warn both of you I would leave."
She never believed it.
Mother should know better than to doubt me,
Bowen replied shaking his head.
Tyran’s voice softened uncharacteristically. I have missed you, Brother.
He paused and drew in a breath. But you seem to be doing well.
Tyran hitched his thumb over his shoulder towards the apartment and the beautiful woman sleeping inside.
Bowen squeezed his eyes shut and rasped, "Do not even consider it."
The smirk returned to Tyran’s face as he chided, You never share—always too attached to your food.
She is more than food to me, and you know it.
They always are. Too bad; she looks delectable—another fair-haired beauty.
Tyran looked through the window thoughtfully for a moment. How long will you stay with her?
What concern is it of yours?
Bowen inquired, his voice calm.
So hostile,
Tyran laughed as he stood up. Now I certainly must have a taste.
Instantly, Bowen was standing before Tyran, blocking his path to the apartment. Leave her be, and you can stay.
There was a hint of defeat in his tone.
Tyran returned to his seat with a triumphant expression.
Do not look so happy. You would not like her anyway. She is good.
Then why are you going to break her heart? Or will you turn her?
Bowen’s shoulders slumped, and he plopped next to his brother. The real answer: he was lonely. He swallowed hard and replied, You know my feelings on turning humans. I will make sure she has everything she needs when I go. She will be better for having had me in her life a brief time.
So you will slink away into the night, as you did to your own family?
Bowen cringed. No. She’s human and can have no hope of my return. I won’t have her wait for me needlessly. I won’t be cruel.
He paused and indicated some soldiers loitering outside a brothel at the end of the street. "War
