    Why Learn About History

It’s important that we learn about the past because it helps us with the future. We can learn from the mistakes and actions of people in the past to know how to make better choices for our future. Learning about history also helps us to understand why the world is as it is, why people are how they are, and why we do what we do. Everything in our lives today has some connection to the past. Think about the language we use. This has been shaped over the years to be what it is today.

Learning about the different history in each culture helps us understand why we say some things are good and other things are bad. Why do different countries around the world have different types of rulers? For example, some countries have presidents, prime ministers, or chancellors, and others have a king and queen, duke and duchess, chairman, or supreme leader. That’s because the history of these countries has influenced how they rule and how they decide what is right and wrong. Who we are is locked inside the histories of the world around us. That’s because we find our purpose in life when we understand where we come from.

    Welcome, History Explorer!

Did you know? You know more about Rome than you think you do. I’ll prove it. You probably know about the strong and fearless gladiators and know the name Julius Caesar—the man, not the salad. Although many of us think that the Caesar salad is named after Julius, it’s not. Instead, it is named after an Italian man who was also named Caesar. What a strange coincidence!

Let me prove you know more. Do you know any of these words: triumph, ovation, consul, dictator, forum, augur, circus, curator, patrician, senate, and decimate? They come from Ancient Rome, and while their meanings have changed a bit, we still use them today. Or can you name a few of the planets that orbit our sun? Their names had significant importance to the people who lived in Ancient Rome. How cool is that!

In this book, you’ll become an explorer and travel back in time with us to the magical world of Ancient Rome. We’ll go back to a time when gladiators roamed the streets and chariots were the best way to travel. A time where HUGE buildings and places were built that still exist today! We’ll explore how the Romans lived and the legends and myths they told. We’ll walk alongside the emperors and learn about the choices they had to make and the consequences of those choices. But most of all, we’re going to have fun.

A Peek Into the Ancient World of Rome

Our journey begins on the banks of the Tiber River. Our ears will hear the stories and whispers of a legend about two brothers and how Rome began. We will witness how the government and societies were during the Roman Republic. Travel into the magical past and explore the legends and the myths of Rome. Watch the rise of the Roman Empire and walk alongside the emperors who ruled. Learn of their choices and the consequences they faced. Then, we will enter the Golden Age when the Roman Empire was at its strongest. Explore how they lived:

We will go into battle with the soldiers, learn their tricks, and watch them conquer so many places. We will become inventors and architects and learn about the things they invented and built. Learn about their art and become artists ourselves. We will gaze at the stars and learn about the different Roman gods and goddesses and the impact that religion had on their lives. Then, when we are all filled up with information about the great Roman Empire, we will follow the choices and actions that led to the start of the empire’s downfall. We’ll see them split the empire in two and watch as one part crumbles and the other part remains.

Welcome, history explorer! I hope you have packed some snacks, water, sunscreen, jokes, and your imagination, because our adventure awaits!

    CHAPTER 1

Bow To The Kings Of Rome

    W

e start our journey at the beginning before Rome was founded. Our exploration begins with legends that have been told for thousands of years. Legends are stories that people tell and share that they believe to be true and historically accurate, even though they have no physical proof that the story is real and true. Some 3,000 years ago, people were telling different legends about how Rome came to be. Today, we are going to tell you a legend that takes all of these other legends and turns them into a great one.

The Legend, the Myth, the Start of Rome

A mythical Trojan hero named Aeneas (uh-NEE-uhs) fled from the ruins of Troy. He carried his old father, Anchises (an-KY-seez), over his shoulder and led his son by hand as they made their way to the shores of Italy. Other Trojans followed them, also wanting to find a home and safety in a new place. Finally, they reached the land of Latium and received signs from the gods that Latium would bring about a great empire. Aeneas founded the city of Lavinium. But after his death, his son, Ascanius (as-KAY-nee-uhs), moved their kingdom to Alba Longa, another city within Latium. Aeneas’s descendants ruled the kingdom for 300 years until a prince grew greedy for power and put an end to the peaceful reign of Aeneas’s descendants.

This prince was named Amulius (uh-MYOO-lee-uhs) and took the throne from his brother, Numitor. Wanting to make sure that he remained King, Amulius imprisoned Numitor’s daughter, Rhea Silvia. They made her take the vows of a Vestal Virgin so that she wouldn’t give birth to a boy who would have a legal claim to the throne. The war god, Mars, was unhappy with this and gave Rhea Silvia twin boys. Amulius was so angry about losing his throne that he told one of his servants to take the twin baby boys and throw them in the River Tiber to drown.

But the servant had a kind heart and placed the two boys in a basket, letting them float down the river with the Roman gods looking after them. The baby boys were carried to a place with seven hills, where they safely got pushed onto the shore. A female wolf called Lupa found the baby boys and nursed them in her cave. Then, a woodpecker would come swooping into the cave to feed the baby boys. The wolf and woodpecker looked after the baby boys until a shepherd and his wife found them and raised them as their own. The boys were named Romulus and Remus.

As the boys grew up, it became clear that they were destined to be leaders. They were the leaders of a young group of shepherd warriors. When they were strong and ready, the shepherd and his wife told the boys who they were: They were princes, and their evil great-uncle had sentenced them to drown in the Tiber river. Angry with their great-uncle, Romulus (ROM-yuh-luhs) and Remus (REE-muhs) made their way to Alba Longa, where they defeated their great-uncle and gave the kingdom back to their grandfather, Numitor.

But they wanted to have a kingdom of their own. So they returned to the place of seven hills where they had been saved. Romulus wanted to
