In 1992, in the city of Jacksonville, Florida, I found myself immersed in a lifestyle I no longer endorse. Engaged in the trade of illicit substances, it was a chapter of my life that now belongs to the past, not the present. Wisdom often arises from the crucible of one's mistakes, and I recognized the need to outgrow the patterns that could entrap one into becoming a creature of habit.

On a particular day, while residing at 3734 Firestone Road with my auntie, Mrs. Cattie Mae Daniels, I concluded my activities in the world of narcotics. Despite my involvement in such endeavors, I made a conscious effort never to indulge in these activities within the confines of my auntie's home or her yard. Beyond those boundaries, however, a different set of rules seemed to apply, and Sweetwater became a lucrative ground for my operations. Deciding it was time for a break, I made my way to Adventure Landing on Blanding Blvd.

The leisurely break took an unexpected turn as I engaged in a few rounds of golf and then retreated indoors to indulge in my favorite pastime, Ms. Pacman. Amid the electronic sounds and flashing lights of the arcade, my attention was abruptly captured by the presence of a captivating woman. Her allure was undeniable, and my focus shifted entirely from the pixelated pursuits of Ms. Pacman. Losing two lives in the game, I abandoned the pursuit of a high score as I made my way toward her.

In an attempt to brighten her evening, I inquired, What was wrong with you, red? She shared her grievances, revealing that her companion had denied her the thrill of riding the go-karts and was indifferent to her presence. Sympathetic to her plight, I sought to ease her discomfort and asked for her phone number. Without hesitation, she provided it, and in a secluded corner, we shared a moment, partaking in the soothing smoke of a joint.

With her number safely stored in my beeper case, I left Adventure Landing behind and returned home. The trajectory of my day took an unexpected turn, setting the stage for a series of events that would eventually reshape my life in ways I never anticipated.

in an unexpected twist of fate, our paths converged once again. With a friendly yet surprised expression, Kenya greeted me, Hey, it's me, Kenya. I didn't expect you to call. In response, I casually remarked, Well, you did give me your number. What's up? Kenya shared her amusement at the unexpected call and recounted our previous encounters. As we reminisced, I learned more about her life and the challenges she faced as a single mother raising three boys.

Despite the ongoing dealings in my life, a routine transaction awaited me at home – a meeting with a contact who required a hundred dollars. The late hour prompted him to tack on an extra $50 as a convenience fee, a tempting proposition that kept me engaged in the world of dealing.

During that period, my Westside connections—Mr. Outlaw, Mr. Hatchard, Mr. Marvin, Mr. Staten, and M-Jones, including T-Jones—remained instrumental in providing a consistent stream of work. However, as the years passed, a crossroads emerged, forcing me to contemplate a crucial decision: continue down the path of dealing or transition to a more conventional life with a steady job.

Opting for a change, I made the shift from the world of illicit dealings to the structured routine of a regular 9-5 job at Hardee’s on Wilson Boulevard. In reality, the job felt more like a 5-2 arrangement. As I prepared for work one morning, an unexpected incident occurred when the back of my beeper broke. Investigating further, I discovered a number that had fallen out. Intrigued, I decided to make a call, and on the other end, a lady named Ms. Penny answered.

Seeking clarity on the origin of the number, Ms. Penny pointed to Kenya as the likely source. The mystery deepened, prompting Ms. Penny to fetch Kenya, who was waiting outside. Kenya's unexpected presence signaled the beginning of yet another unforeseen chapter in the unfolding narrative of my life.

the neighbor, were outside too. We all engaged in casual conversation, the evening breeze adding a soothing touch to the atmosphere. As we continued chatting, Aunt Cat, a warm and wise presence, joined us on the porch. She had a knack for making everyone feel at home. Kenya seemed to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and the company of my family. Eventually, the evening progressed, and Kenya and I decided to head back to my cousin BJ's house. The Young and the Restless had concluded, freeing up the living room for more personal conversations. Kenya and BJ had a chance to connect more meaningfully, their laughter blending with the ambient sounds of the evening.

As the night deepened, we decided to call it a day. Kenya and I bid farewell to my cousins, expressing gratitude for their hospitality. We headed back across the Matthews Bridge, navigating through the city lights. The gentle hum of my 1977 Dotson B210 accompanied the rhythmic beat of our conversation.

Arriving at my place, we continued our dialogue, sharing stories and getting to know each other better. The night unfolded in a natural and comfortable way, setting the foundation for a connection that would evolve into something more profound.

In the days that followed, Kenya and I spent more time together, navigating the complexities of our lives and forging a bond that went beyond the initial encounter at Adventure Landing. Little did we know that the choices made at that fork in the road would lead to a chapter filled with unexpected twists, growth, and the blossoming of a connection that would change both our lives forever.

    ––––––––

A.K.A., Low Rider, paid us a visit. At that time, they were a married couple. Kenya was introduced to Ernie and Low Rider, who went inside for a private conversation. We rejoined the family in the living room, where Kenya seamlessly blended in, embraced by the warmth of my relatives. Aunt Cat's legendary cooking added to the festivities, and Kenya had the pleasure of savoring some of her delicious dishes. Aunt Cat's house at 3734 Firestone Road was a neighborhood hub, akin to a lively juke joint.

Auntie's place was always filled with characters, the kind of old souls that shaped my own. Names like George, Lou Lou, Pop, Funk Man, and Whop linger in my memories. It was a gathering spot, a place where people came together like a close-knit community. Kenya met many of them, and as we fondly reminisce, we pay respects to those who have departed.

After a satisfying meal, we headed back to BJ's house on Jackhorner. With The Young and the Restless off the air, we had BJ's undivided attention. The evening took a relaxed turn with some beer and quality-grade weed from back in the day. Knowing I had work the next day, Kenya stayed behind to spend time with BJ.

Later that day, BJ's son, Pig, and daughter, Nita, returned home. Kenya met more family members, and we all gathered in the living room for easygoing conversations. My family, not inclined to pry, are laid-back and cool, welcoming to anyone until crossed. With the introductions complete, Kenya and I retired to the makeshift bedroom near the kitchen.

In that intimate space, we engaged in a serious conversation. I expressed that for us to grow closer, she needed to move in with me. Without hesitation, she agreed. As we settled in for the night, the understanding was clear – a new chapter was about to unfold.

The next morning, I rose early to prepare for work. Kenya greeted me with a good morning, and as I left for work, the anticipation of our shared future filled the air. At work, my crew noticed a change in my demeanor, a happiness I couldn't contain. It felt like I was on top of the world, and the day unfolded smoothly. After finishing my tasks, I clocked out and headed home. Upon my return, BJ was absent, and a new chapter in our story was ready to unfold.

    ––––––––

I returned home to find Kenya gone, but I wasn't upset as I had a surprise for her—a card from Food Lion, just up the street from my job. On my way to the store, I noticed BJ and Kenya exiting, so I parked at a distance and lowered my music. Mr. Ernest Jackson greeted me, and we exchanged pleasantries. He mentioned seeing BJ with someone unfamiliar, and I casually shared that she was my new girlfriend. We shared a laugh, and I proceeded to buy a card for Kenya.

As I approached the cash register, Mr. Jackson wished me well and asked me to greet my mom for him. Back home, Kenya was paging me, and with a card and flowers in hand, I surprised her. She had a big smile as I entered, hugged her, and played the Set It Off song she liked. Her reaction to the card and flowers was priceless, and she teared up. Unfortunately, BJ walked in at that moment and assumed something was amiss, but upon realizing the gesture, she apologized and embraced Kenya.
