I am grateful to the many individuals too numerous to mention, whose examples of faith have imbued within me a desire to pursue and follow eternal truths. This pursuit has filled me with wonder, awe, and deep gratitude for the marvelous world we live in and for our Heavenly Father and His beloved Son for providing this wonderful gift.

This book would not be possible without the brilliant minds and discoveries of scientists of all disciplines throughout the ages, and prophets of God whose teachings compliment these discoveries of truth. This book is an attempt to cite several of these truths and teachings to assist the reader in their honest quest for truth and strengthen their resolve to hold it fast.

I am also indebted to many friends and associates whose comments and editing skills have proven invaluable. These include my dear wife Valerie; without whose support this work would not be possible. I am also grateful to Mark Burton for his encouragement to publish this from a draft paper and to Steven Farnsworth, Sheri, Nathan, and Brandon Burton for their suggestions and editing skills.

    CHAPTER 1

MEN ARE THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE JOY. ¹

    TRUE IDENTITY

Simple common sense dictates that being happy is much more enjoyable and desirable than being miserable. Why, then, would anyone choose to be miserable by seeking happiness where it cannot be found? As Samuel the Lamanite warned the Nephite nation who had forgotten God, for ye have sought all the days of your lives for that which ye could not obtain; and ye have sought for happiness in doing iniquity, which thing is contrary to the nature of righteousness.² Alma similarly taught his son Corianton that when we are without God, we have gone contrary to the nature of happiness for wickedness never was happiness.³

Lehi taught that the devil, seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.⁴ Clearly, there are opposing forces at work in this eternal tug of war; the one pulling us strongly towards misery and the other towards happiness. Why, then, do so many allow themselves to be pulled in the proverbial wrong direction?

I would suggest that much of this misdirection stems from not knowing one’s true identity. If one knew that they were a son or daughter of God, then the knowledge of this divine pedigree would fill that gnawing longing to belong; a void which the adversary is all too willing to fill with carnal and degrading activities.

Joseph Smith taught, as recorded in his Lectures on Faith, that to develop faith we need to: 1) believe that God exists, 2) understand His attributes, and 3) know that the path we are pursuing is pleasing to Him.

Once we understand God’s perfect attributes of love, knowledge, and power; that we are created in His image⁶ male and female; and know that we are sincerely trying to follow His commandments to achieve our eternal potential, then faith can grow.⁷

Likewise, if we believe in God but are unsure of who He is, then faith is very difficult to develop; for how do we worship a God whom we cannot understand? If we do not believe in Him, then we are left to search aimlessly for meaning elsewhere and are likely to align ourselves with that which cannot satisfy.⁸ We will examine God’s attributes more fully in a later chapter; but we must first, with the aforementioned thoughts as a foundation, begin with the most basic question for mankind. Does God exist?

    CHAPTER 2

    REASON AND REVELATION

    EVIDENCE OF GOD

Through the ages, scientists and philosophers such as Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109), Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716), and Kurt Gödel (1906-1978) have achieved fame by attempting to prove God’s existence mathematically. In 1931, Gödel concluded in his Incompleteness Theorem that other worlds and rational beings of a different and higher kind exist; that our world is not the only one in which we shall live or have lived; that there is scientific or an exact philosophy and theology which deals with concepts of the highest abstractness; and religions are for the most part bad, but not religion itself.⁹ In other words, the belief in God and His divine direction is good, but man-made religions void of God’s direction hinder our understanding of deity and our sense of purpose.

Gödel then concluded through complex equations based on modal logic and positive properties, that God exists and that the world in which we live could not have occurred by accident.¹⁰ When we observe the majesty of God’s handiwork all around us, it is understandable that a brilliant mind like Gödel would strive to mathematically prove his conclusions; a noteworthy yet impossible task. Fortunately, we need not rely on man’s wisdom for God’s prophets throughout the ages have provided us with clear direction as to His existence and identity.

Approximately 74 years before Christ was born, the anti-Christ Korihor sought to justify his wicked behavior by asserting to the prophet Alma that there was no God. We read this conversation between them in Alma chapter 30 of The Book of Mormon:

"Now Alma said unto him: ‘Will ye deny again that there is a God, and also deny the Christ? For behold, I say unto you, I know there is a God, and also that Christ shall come. And now what evidence have ye that there is no God, or that Christ cometh not? I say unto you that ye have none, save it be your word only. But, behold, I have all things as a testimony that these things are true; and ye also have all things as a testimony unto you that they are true; and will ye deny them? Believest thou that these things are true? Behold, I know that thou believest, but thou art possessed with a lying spirit, and ye have put off the Spirit of God that it may have no place in you; but the devil has power over you, and he doth carry you about, working devices that he may destroy the
