1 WORD SCRAMBLE PUZZLE Copy or trace each of the sets of squares and circles on this page onto a piece of paper. Unscramble each of the four words below. Then write the letters that spell each word you have unscrambled in the set of squares that goes with that word. Write them in the proper order, putting one letter into each square. Some of the letters will go into squares that have circles inside them. Then these letters will have circles around them.
Now put the five circled letters into your copy of the circles below. Put them into the circles in the same order in which they appear in the words that you have unscrambled. Start with the first circled letter in the first word. End with the last circled letter in the fourth word.
The letters that you have put into the circles above spell the name of a unit of length in the metric system. This unit is a little longer than a yard. Its symbol is m.
2 WORD EVOLUTION PUZZLE Copy or trace the boxes to the right onto a piece of paper. Change the word YARDS to the word METER. Change one letter at a time. Each time that you change a letter, a correctly spelled word must result for the next line. (There is more than one way to solve this puzzle.)
3 WORD SCRAMBLE PUZZLE
The letters that you have put into the circles above spell the name of another unit of length in the metric system. This unit is one thousand times as long as a meter. It is used in the metric system to measure distances that are measured in miles in the English system. The symbol for this unit is km.
4 Make as many words as you can from the letters in the word kilometer. (You may not use proper nouns, foreign words, abbreviations, slang, or contractions.)
5 HIDDEN WORD PUZZLE Hidden in the words that are under the picture is the name of a third unit of length in the metric system. This unit is used to measure lengths that are less than one meter.
