    Translating Love - Celeste Parker

    Chapter 1

The small, aging house seemed to sigh with Selena's every step. It was as if the old building shared in her weariness, echoing the feeling of a life that had seen better days. The shower had been a faithful companion to her mornings, but it too was showing its age with a constant leak that taunted her with a stubborn, rhythmic drip.

Selena Acosta stood before the cracked bathroom mirror; her reflection framed by peeling paint. Her deep-set, light brown eyes gazed back at her, revealing a determined, goal-oriented spirit within. A square face and a narrow nose completed her modest features, but her most distinctive trait was her very short, curly black hair. She ran a hand through it, the rebellious curls resisting any attempts to tame them.

Today, she'd had the displeasure of a cold shower, a relentless reminder that her hot water heater might be on its last legs. Shivering, she wrapped herself in a faded terrycloth robe, her plump hips filling it out as she moved to the small, cluttered kitchen.

As she stirred in a dollop of honey, her mind wandered, as it often did during these quiet moments. She pictured herself in a new home, one that wasn't crumbling around her, a place where the hot water flowed consistently and the paint adorned the walls in vibrant hues.

Selena had always been one to dream big. She longed for a life where her strong legs carried her through pristine, sunlit spaces, a life where she could put her narrow feet up at the end of a long day, perhaps with the company of someone special. She didn't let her practicality hold her back from the allure of what could be, her dreams of a better life were what helped her getting up every morning.

With her tea ready and her hopes tucked away, Selena checked her watch. She couldn't afford to be late, not again. She'd never had a knack for punctuality, especially when her old house seemed to conspire against her every morning. In her haste, she left a stack of unwashed dishes
