    Everything was exactly as it had been.

    Connor sighed in relief as the house stood a little smaller than he used to remember, a little less inconspicuous than it should have been. The sun shone brightly through every crack in the stone walls of the country house.

    He was taller now, and taller meant he could tower through the cramped door and pretend there was nothing scary in how the hinges creaked as he opened it.

    There was no way a grownup would have been afraid of something as innocuous as a house, after all.

    The owners assured him they hadn’t touched anything from the old days; Connor wished they had, as he saw the furniture stacked up against the wall in the same exact way it was when he had run inside and announced to his parents that he wanted to leave that place. His father had looked at him with empty eyes and done nothing else but nod gravely. He did not hesitate, and for that, Connor had always been grateful.
