Rule Of Thumb
Meaning: A general principle or guideline that provides practical advice or a basic method, rather than a strict or precise measure.
Origin: The origin of rule of thumb
is not definitively known, but several theories exist. One of the most widely believed is that the term originated from old English law, which allegedly allowed a man to beat his wife with a stick, provided it was no wider than his thumb. However, there's no documented evidence whatsoever of such a law ever existing and is highly likely to be an urban myth or an unfunny jocular
comment that somehow gained momentum. A more plausible origin relates to various manual trades where workers used the width or length of their thumbs as a rough measurement. For instance, farmers and gardeners might have used their thumbs to approximate planting depths, or brewers might have used the thumb to gauge the right temperature for yeast.
