Pale Horse
Late, late, late, ooooh, Hori was going to kill her. Sunada ducked her head away from the rain and jumped over a rising puddle. The Three Falls roared and churned overhead, crashing over the flood marker. The water swamped the empty street. Empty except for Sunada who was so very late. Her wet skirt clung to her knees which made running awkward. Her toes were freezing, her curls were likely a lost cause-- whoa! Sunada's dress shoes slid on the tiles of the atrium. She flailed.
Solid arms caught her from behind. Sunada looked up at an equally drenched mop of red hair. She blushed down to her toes. Oh, gosh.
It had to be Koyama. Of course. Thanks.
Koyama smiled at her and Sunada's legs went to rubber. Her insides melted. She wanted Koyama to gaze at her like that forever.
You're ok. Up you get.
Sunada jumped and looked away. Her skin permanently blushed, but she steadfastly ignored it, trying to find solid footing. Thunder crackled overhead. She gasped. Sunada grabbed Koyama's hand and forgot all about being infatuated. Come on, come on, we're so dead.
Together they ran through the atrium (empty), the gardens (empty), and the forward receiving dias (empty!) Oh, crap,
Koyama muttered. They're already in the rear dias. Come on, this way.
She pulled on Sunada's hand. Sunada slid on the tiles and followed, heart racing for an entirely different reason.
They might not die right away, but only because Hori wouldn't want to commit murder while the goddess addressed everyone. This deep into the building, the storm was a distant rolling thing. Even the Three Falls roaring were a minor echo. Instead, Sunada caught the first strains of choir voices. Her gut twisted. They were missing the summoning. Sunada yanked her hand from Koyama's grip and slapped it over her mouth. She screamed and closed her eyes tight. There was no sense in going in, now, not if they were already summo--
Keep it together, Sunada. Go!
Koyama hissed and pushed her. She stumbled toward a doorway. Light spread beyond it. The side, rear entrance of the choir. Sunada straightened her back, tossed her lost-cause curls over her shoulder and cleared her throat.
Then Koyama grabbed her hand and whispered the words being sung. Sunada looked up at her. Nodded. Together they stepped through the door and subtly joined the back of the group, voices rising in time with the other singers.
They didn't escape Hori's notice. She directed the choir from the front, arms swinging. Cords draped over her shoulders in a rare display of her station. Without a hitch she pinned Sunada and Koyama with a vicious glare that made Sunada wince. Her voice faltered. Koyama squeezed her hand. Sunada forced herself to sing.
They'd been practicing this piece for months. The entire city stood just beyond the raised dais, candles lit and eyes anticipatory. And if the goddess decided not to grace the city with her presence, Sunada knew she was to blame. Being late for the summoning-- she'd never forgive herself. She didn't have any parents for the dishonor to stain, but Hori wouldn't stand for it anyway. Sunada didn't even have a good excuse.
Hori's hands guided their voices to a slow finish. Sunada held her breath and shut her eyes. She looked down. If the goddess didn't show, she didn't want to see everyone's attention slowly shifting to her. She didn't want to see her choir move away so they wouldn't be associated, leaving her alone. They'd probably stone her. No one had been stoned in generations but they'd make an exception for the girl who kept the goddess away.
Koyama yanked hard on her hand. This
