He didn't believe the old man until he saw the curvy waitress with red hair and a smile that squeezed his cold, dead heart back to life. But Nikolai is a dangerous man and can't risk dirtying up the sweet, innocent Liza, even if it kills him.

When he finds Liza in tears one night, he can't hold back. He'll protect her and earn her trust back if it's the last thing he does.

Can Liza prove she's ready for everything Niko has to offer, no matter how dark? Can Nikolai win Liza's heart and keep her forever?

One look at the stunning waitress carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders, and I’m a goner. I wasn’t looking for a sweet little thing with auburn hair and more baggage than I can fit on the back of my bike, but there’s no going back now. She’s mine. I’ll prove to her I’m more than capable of handling her past and making her feel safe again.

    Chapter 1

    Liza

I am so sorry, Mr. Humphrey, I apologize for the fifth time. Are you sure I can’t get you anything else?

He lets out an exasperated sigh. No, Liza. I don’t want to risk another lap full of pie.

I cringe but nod my head. I understand. Again, I’m so—

He holds his hand up to stop me. I don’t want to hear it. Are you sure you should be a waitress? You’re always breaking things.

Shrugging, I continue to clean up the blueberry pie that is now splattered all over the floor. It’s not the first time someone has brought up the fact that I’m clumsy and probably shouldn’t be a waitress. In fact, it’s not even the first time he’s brought it up.

Mr. Humphrey has been one of our regular customers for years. He’s in his late forties, if I had to guess, and has salt and pepper hair, broad shoulders, and stands a good six inches taller than most people.

Unfortunately, he's a total asshole. Oh, and he’s been sleeping with my mother for the last several months. Gross.

Our hostess, Sarah, knows better than to seat him in my area. Mr. Humphrey has made it abundantly clear how he feels about my waitressing skills. He disdains me and my clumsiness as much as my mother does. However, we're short-staffed today so the asshole got stuck with me.

He scoots his chair back and watches me clean up my mess. He actually folds his arms over his chest and stretches his legs out, crossing them at the ankle. I’ve noticed him watching me more closely when he stops by the trailer my mother and I live in, but I’ve brushed it off. I thought I was making things up, but there’s no mistaking the way he’s looking at me right now.

I ignore him and his creepy stare while I finish scrubbing the floor. When I’m done, I hesitantly drag my eyes up to meet his. Mr. Humphrey is staring at my chest and I feel the need to put a sweatshirt on or something.

I’m not wearing anything sexy, just a v-neck t-shirt. With all the curves I’m rocking, however, I’m sure he got a bit of a show while I was bent over. Perv. I’m not sure why he’s still here. I told him his meal was on the house.

Mr. Humphrey licks his lips and I look away. Damn, he rumbles under his breath. Your mom has nothing on your curves.

I freeze at his words, but then shake it off. Instead of crying or slapping Mr. Humphrey, I roll my eyes at the smug jerk and try to ignore the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. His eyes dip down to my breasts, then lower, before he clears his throat and stands up.

He looks at me like I’m a disobedient dog, shaking his head in disappointment. Liza, Liza, Liza, he says in a condescending tone. What am I doing to do with you?

I’m still on the floor while the tall, imposing man looms over me. I scramble out of his way right as he takes a step forward, his massive foot coming down on my ankle.

"Ow!" I shriek, grabbing my foot.

Mr. Humphrey stumbles a little and bumps into a chair before steadying himself. Goddamnit, look what you made me do!

I have a thousand responses on the tip of my tongue, each one some creative variation of fuck off, but I swallow the words down. If I tell him off right now, I’d be out a job and likely a home by the end of the day. While I very much want to leave my life behind, I have a plan. One I hope to act upon soon.

Leave, a deep, gravelly voice booms from behind me.

I don't turn around to see who it is. Instead, I stare right at Mr. Humphrey to see how he likes being bullied.

Are you serious? His face is red I see the muscles in his neck strain. This is her fault! if she didn't—
