    In a Million Years – Evolution-Omnipotence - L.L. Nachov

    Chapter 1

    Vian’s Uploads

One million years since humans first appeared within the infinite universe. Our evolution peak has been reached or at least during present times. Evolution-omnipotence we call it. But beyond us all, there lies one story that humanity at this time will forever remember, the story of a boy named Vian. A young boy, who doomed us all; a young boy, who saved us all.

    ∞ ∞ ∞

Today is my 16th birthday and I must wait another 10 days till my immortality claim. An immortality claim right; that is some great stuff, an eternal life just to be a 16-year-old kid only wandering and exploring. Of course, everyone gets to choose when they want to claim their immortality, I just have the habit of rushing into things. But let’s be patient, another 10 days till that but what about today? Mum and Dad are nowhere to be found till later and I am left with my older cousin Rikos to go and check some data uploads.

The data uploads, the centres where you get information for everything, if you want to know chemistry, you go and upload that into your brain, you want to know history; you kind of get the picture. There is just one problem, there is a limit on the uploads to which your brain can sustain itself but also, there is the option to delete one piece of data and upload another. Oh my, it is so overwhelming, I can’t wait.

    ∞ ∞ ∞

And we are finally here at the main centre where everyone gets to browse all the millions of options available.

Okay Vian, this is your first data upload, choose wisely and upload a small piece of information only, trust me you don’t want a re-boot if you mess up something. There are some suggestions for your age in your first life. I would go for the 1st level optimal manual upload, it gives you loads of information on how to navigate around the vast world of humanity, Rikos was explaining while looking forward at the horizon.

I think I would go for that yes but I could also go for the 10th level history manual and the 5th level combat manual. Or what about the 10th level logic manual I heard from Mum and Dad; it is one incredible asset to have, my excitement got me circling around cousin Rikos.

Cousin, please do not be so hasty, the keeper will only allow you to get a very small piece of upload for your age and I am not even sure any, before your immortality claim that is! Also, uploads start from level 1 in an ascending order, you cannot go straight for level 10, it will take most of your brain capacity and that is in a few thousand years. Why am I even explaining you this, there is a keeper which knows what to do, let’s go see one.

But I thought you can learn anything here, this is a waste of time, how upsetting.

Yes, you can learn anything but not everything! Rikos implied.

    Whatever, let’s just go.

What a waste of my birthday, I thought I could learn so many things, it turns out I can just upload a freaking navigation system in my brain. Wow, look at the centre, it is so huge and the amount of people. The building is entirely made of glass on the outside and has the shape of a trident, the doors are some kind of scanners and in the middle, there is a big sign with the learning symbol, a golden book under the ancient tree of life.

With cousin Rikos, we walked in and went onto the blue laser-conveyor path, which had a sign above ‘10–1,000’ but I could also see a green and a yellow path. The green’s sign is ‘1,001–100,000’ and the yellow’s one is ‘100,001+’, I guess they mean age. And look at the characteristics of this place. So tidy, like every millimetre is where it is supposed to be, could use some chaos if you ask me.

Proceed to the next available keeper, automated voice.

That is for us kid, Rikos started walking further into the centre.

Don’t call me a kid, I am not a kid anymore. Why are we in the blue zone, how old are you, Rikos?

I am 13,217 years old but I am accompanying you now.

Pointing at the signs above the paths.

So those numbers are really age groups?

    Yes.

How old is the oldest human?

I think more than 700,000 years now, Rikos replied.

Wow, will I live that long?

You can live for as long as you like dear cousin, it is up to you, Rikos said calmly.

What happens if I die? so interested to know!

You will be brought back to life after a thousand years and when that happens, you choose if you want to stay dead or alive, seemingly simple.

Wow, wait so? Hey Rikos, why are there so many rooms with so many keepers? my thoughts are all over the place, so many people, such a vast building.

The amount of people that come and go from this place is hard to keep up with, Rikos replied.

    Where is our room?

That would be the first one with a blue light above the door. There it is, come on let us go in, Rikos kindly opened the door for me.

Finally, something exciting on my birthday. The room looks really welcoming, there are loads of plants and it smells like a forest. In the centre, I see a dark blue leather chair and a middle-aged woman dressed in a formal blue dress. Her eyes are blue, her nails are blue and earrings are blue. It might have something to do with the blue laser path. It is also warm and the LED ceiling lights are relaxing. I looked straight in the lady’s eyes and she gently smiled.

Have a seat Vian, let us talk about what brought you here today, The lady said with a calming voice.

    Suspicious, how does she—?

Hey lady, how do you know my name?

Your mother Vivian introduced you when she booked you in, the lady replied.

Oh, sorry. In that case, I am here to learn everything.

Rikos and the lady started giggling.

    Why are they laughing?

    Did I say something funny?

We are not laughing Vian, we are simply admiring your young impulses, said Rikos.

The lady turned to me and gently grabbed my hand.

Vian, in a case such as yours, I have already been instructed by a guardian. I can explain it to you if you want.

Geez, it’s my birthday and still Mum takes away my freedom, again.

She is not taking away your freedom Vian, it is only because you are still not able to comprehend what data centres are capable of and how they work, the keeper explained.

Are you always that smart or is it only when you talk to teenagers? look at me acting tough.

Vian, stop it! I get that you are angry but this is no way to talk to a Keeper! Rikos made a remark and looked at me, as if he wanted me to show discipline.

Vian, I have a protocol that allows me to tie up children with no manners and leave them in a dark room for a few days, the lady keeper expressed an evil smile.

I barely smiled, no more words coming out of this mouth!

Good, now let us proceed with your data uploads. It will not take long, the keeper started preparing some experimental looking machinery.

Wait, will it hurt? I’m scared.

The procedure is psychological and therefore has no physical effect on your body. You might feel disorientated for a few minutes after the upload but this is normal and will pass. I will be uploading the 1st level optimal manual, 1st level history manual and for the third upload, your mum has instructed me to let you choose, consider it a birthday present, the lady smiled again but nicely this time.

The optimal manual, the history manual and one more. So that is why Mum and Dad didn’t spend the day with me, they knew they would end up choosing my 3rd manual, so they left me with cousin Rikos. Let’s see, I want to be able to fight, I love music, I like animals and I want to know more about everything. What will it be, think Vian, think. And while I was taking my time choosing.

Keeper, a word please, Rikos quietly whispered.

    Yes Rikos, what is it?

Isn’t it dangerous to upload three manuals onto Vian? He just turned 16 and it is his first life, his brain is still unpredictable, Rikos was a little worried.

There is a very small chance that he will need a re-boot but his parents trust he is capable. It is a risk I as a keeper would take.

I trust you keeper, let us hope it all goes well.

Do not worry Rikos, we take much higher risks every day in the main data centre, the keeper reassured.

Let me tone up a bit.

Hey Rikos, keeper lady, I made up my mind. I want the 2nd level piano manual.

Vian, only 1st level manuals, Rikos implied.

Actually Rikos, musical instruments are classed as light uploads, therefore a 2nd level will be something that will not burden Vian’s mind.

Hey kid, is that what you want? There is no going back for quite some time after this, Rikos asked just to make sure.

Yes, this is what I want.

Pianos have always sounded settling to me.

Very well Vian, sit back, relax and close your eyes, the lady gently pushed my head back onto the chair.

The lady keeper’s hands just covered the sides of my face. Her skin is so gentle and warm, she is also very beautiful. I can’t stop smiling. Wait, what is this, a burning sensation inside my head. It feels strange as if there is electricity pulsing through my brain. The war, teleports, planets, galaxies, connections, where it all started, engineering, payments, life, death, ancestors, chords, strings, melody, Queen, species, machines, fulfilment, love, happiness, chaos, peace.

Stop, I need it to stop, I don’t feel so good, I can’t move. Why can’t I move? Where am I? I feel, I feel, feel—

    ∞ ∞ ∞

Wake up Vian, how are you feeling? Rikos’ face was hanging over me.

I jumped, Aaa, Rikos what happened, I am scared. Was I still in the centre?

Don’t worry cousin, it is unusual to faint during the uploads but still, it is normal. You are here with me and you are safe. I bet you cannot wait to go home and explode all the knowledge you now have, in your siblings’ faces, Rikos calmed me down.

What knowledge, I don’t feel anything, nothing different here, just my plain old stupidity.

Xaxaxa, you will soon find out, Rikos.

Thank you for visiting data upload centre ‘Yggdrasil’. Have a save journey home, the lady.

Thank you, lady keeper. I know your feelings are programmed but I hope you feel this hug as real as I will, she felt warm and very human.

I hugged her, I had to, she was so beautiful. She was also the latest version of a keeper, a bio machine that is placed in many face to face service-related centres all around the galaxy. Wait, how do I know that? No idea, it’s time to head home and celebrate my birthday with the family. Rikos and I are heading back to the teleportation point, so we can get to our home planet, Azaria.

    Chapter 2

    Vian’s Birthday and the

    History of Humanity

And here we are Azaria, a planet well-known for its giant trees. My home, well my home is next to the roots of Greezer, one of the three biggest trees on the planet. A two story eight-bedroom house, the first floor is fully surrounded with transparent glass walls facing views and our garden, the second floor is solid and also where my family sleeps for the most part. On the first floor is the living room, five-meter-high ceilings, sky light right in the centre, three half-moon leather sofas forming a triangle and in the middle, a three-sided 72-inch TV.

The entire space is complimented with black lacquer finished cabinetry, with LED lighting, it looks really sleek but in the end, it is furniture older than time itself. A drinks bar, which I am now allowed to use sometimes and six egg-shaped chairs for relaxation and to enjoy the outside beauty. I really love our garden, a vast variety of plantation and a size of more than one thousand square metres, some animal shaped bushes, plenty of paths to walk in between.

We also care for a few animals, rabbits, ostriches, female deer and Koribos. In the middle of our garden is our outdoor swimming pool and some soft wood sunbeds and who would have guessed, another drinks bar. And my all-time favourite, the gaming room, eight pods with the latest gaming equipment to access Omniris, the only game our world needs. There is the bio-enhanced suit that enables you to feel everything you are experiencing in the game and the floating pods allow you to move freely without any limitations.

Omniris is the place where trillions of people meet to do whatever, someone came up with the idea a really long time ago but the actual game was created after quite some time. You want to ride a snowboard, access your profile select the destination and go ride a snowboard, you want to fight one versus one with giant robots, access your profile select the destination and go fight.

There is everything you can imagine and more, even a whole world for adults with sexual content which, frankly, is where most adults spend their gaming time. However, the game is limited to six hours a day for some unknown, probably ridiculous reasons. The first floor of the house also has a mini night club, a meditation room and a gym, pretty much a standard family house.

Vian! yelled my sister Gina as she jumped on my neck, Welcome home little brat, how did your uploads go? Happy birthday by the way!

Well, I fainted and I don’t feel any different, so I guess it was just a waste of time. Thanks, let me stretch my neck further back from Gina’s face.

Don’t worry Vian, it will all become clear over our special dinner, said Mum, after she overheard me and Gina.

Mum, hi I am so happy to be home, it was a long day, finally feeling relaxed after seeing my mum, Vivian.

Come on inside, your father and the others will be home in a few hours, Vivian.

You mean they are not home yet? typical, they don’t care that it’s my birthday.

Do not worry yourself, everyone knows it’s your birthday sweetheart, Vivian smiled and kissed me on the forehead.

Yeah brat, everyone knows how special you are! Gina.

Gina, stop calling your brother that, Vivian knows me and Gina are always like this.

My dear sister, would you like to grab a glass of wine while we wait for the others? Rikos asked Vivian.

I still have some preparations to take care of but of course we can have a glass of wine whilst I am at it.

Kids, be ready for dinner in three hours, Vivian yelled.

Ok Mum. Hey Gina, let’s play something? the gamer within is always whispering.

I was in for four hours today Vian, I’ll be doing something else. Till later, brat!

Fine by me, I guess I will be playing alone then. Making my way to the gaming room. Putting on the b-suit and entering capsule.

    Access code 113231948, name Vian.

Welcome Vian, today you have six hours remaining. Clearing identity check. Identity confirmed, is there anything else before you access your profile? system voice.

Yes, set an alarm for two hours and forty-five minutes. Disable all pain receptors and monitor vitals, standard procedure.

Alarm has been set for two hours and forty-five minutes, pain receptors disabled, vital function monitoring has been activated. Anything else?

    No, access profile.

    Accessing profile.

Here it is, my safe heaven, my Omniris profile. The game is a virtual reality, so my personal profile is like a small warehouse. I have all my avatars for the different parts of the game I have played, I can delete them or add more. One of my favourite avatars is my fighting robot Vaigar, four-metre tall, I use him for robot fights.

His body is in dark sapphire colour, reinforced W-shaped face mask, one of his arms is a mace and the other has thrusters for increased speed and power. Two shock absorbers in each leg for extra agility, he is an absolute fighting machine. I think I will do a few fights.

Input voice command. Enter robot ultimate fight arena.

Confirming pain receptors are disabled, you will not be able to enable them for this game. Vital monitoring already activated. Entering robot ultimate fight arena, system.

Input voice command. Find opponent, let’s see who will it be.

Initiating search for opponent, battle rank C.

Opponent found. Name Honza, battle rank C. You have five minutes to inspect enemy robot before the fight begins.

Let’s see, Honza. His weapon is a two-handed sword, his whole-body armour is reinforced which makes him harder to move. I need to get into a close fight but what worries me is whatever hides behind his chest armour. Okay, a quick warm up should give me an edge.

Player name Vaigar, your real body will feel heavier and your agility will be lowered to enhance the battle experience. Are you ready? system.

Vaigar ready! my voice sounds cool when I do that.

Both players are ready. Battle starting in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1; fight!

There is a system commentator on the fights. Honza attempts an upper slash with his massive blade but Vaigar ducks forward and avoids the hit, while cutting some distance between his opponent.

This will be easier than I thought.

Vaigar goes for an uppercut with his right hand and activates his thrusters, will this be the end of Honza. No wait, wow, what is this, Honza’s chest armour leaned forward and blocked the powerful uppercut.

‘Hmm his chest armour is mobile, so that was his secret weapon or shield.’

Honza elbowed Vaigar in the back and a second time and a third time, you can hear the metal clanging. Vaigar is on the ground, Honza steps on his back preparing to land a critical blow. Vaigar, grips the left foot, turns quickly, hits the hip with his knee leaving Honza out of balance. Vaigar manages to get Honza on the ground and gets on top.

Troubling times for Honza. Vaigar launches a barrage of hits but Honza’s chest armour dashes up to his face and protects him. Honza kicks Vaigar in the back and frees himself and now he shows off his outstanding jump move and gets on his feet, he just won the crowd ladies and gentlemen and we are back at the start.

‘I can’t land a single blow, his chest armour blocks all my hits. How can I win?’

This cannot be true, Honza’s blade just broke into two pieces and now he has daggers attached to his arms, he sure looks terrifying folks.

‘Oh no, just what I needed, close combat and shield.’

Honza dashes towards Vaigar and starts striking, Vaigar can’t keep up. The first critical blow is dealt, Honza just daggered Vaigar in his right side below his chest, his right hand also strikes deep into Vaigar’s left shoulder. Honza lifts Vaigar in the air with a victorious smile on his face, no Honza just lowered his opponent straight onto his knee that must have hurt! And he shoved him away. Vaigar looks as if almost at the end of his wits, Honza is preparing the crowd for the final blow.

‘My body feels so tight I can barely move, I need to do something fast.’ Vaigar barely got on his feet but shows he is not going down without a fight. Honza rushed and jumped in the air, right dagger forward, this is the end, ladies and gentlemen. Unbelievable while Honza was preparing the crowd, Vaigar moved his thrusters from his hand to his legs, with incredible speed and precision he jumped and hit Honza with his knee whilst airborne.

Honza flipped backwards, Vaigar doesn’t want to wait, he jumped on top of him. No use as Vaigar knows Honza’s chest armour will protect him. What an unexpected move, Vaigar just dropped his mace on Honza’s chest leaving the armour there for an anticipated hit and with full force and perfect timing, leaving just one thruster in his hand, he delivered a fatal blow straight to Honza’s face.

Vaigar stood up and ripped Honza’s legs out from his body, now he maced his chest with full force breaking through his armour. Ladies and gentlemen, the fight is over, what a turnaround and the winner of tonight’s fight is, Vaigar!

Phew, I am glad this is over, that Honza guy almost got me and my god, did he look scary. I feel tired after this fight and my body is aching, after all, in this game when you get hit the suit you are wearing tightens the impact area, sometimes it even hurts a little. I have one hour and twenty minutes left, let’s do something fun. Flying through mountains and waterfalls or bike racing in the desert.

Input voice command. Enter fly mode, open location menu.

Entering fly mode, opening location menu. There are two new areas in last week’s update, fairy world (Quintaria) and dark fire horror (Gehenna), system.

    Enter area Skyvine.

    Entering Skyvine, enjoy your flight.

Flying is fun. You feel weightless and the enhanced suit recreates all your surroundings into actual sensations. My flight avatar is Green Bolt, there is no competition here, just free flying. I tried entering some competitions quite some time ago but it was too fast paced for me.

Fifteen minutes left, I guess I’ll go now and take a quick shower before my birthday dinner. Forgot to mention my Omniris personal profile is decorated, Happy Birthday all over and all my avatars greeted me with a happy birthday. Like I said, Omniris is fun!

We recently installed a four-dimensional shower system, when you go in you have water coming out from beneath you up to face level and also water from on top and from both sides. It is very gentle and makes you feel amazing, Dad said it altered gravity to make the water flow smoothly.

    ∞ ∞ ∞

Vian, come on its time, Vivian shouted.

I am coming Mum, just a minute, I’m getting fat, the button on my jeans won’t click.

Come on son, hurry it up, your dad wants to finally see you on your birthday, Roger.

I said I’m coming, shouting back while putting on the last of my clothes and now rushing down the stairs.

Finally little brother, you are here, said my other sister Miya.

Sister Miya! Miya, my favourite of all the siblings.

    Happy birthday Vian, sister Morona.

    Happy birthday bro, brother Linc.

Happy birthday, little Vian, brother Santinel.

Everyone is here, my mum, dad, my three sisters Gina, Miya, Morona, my two brothers Linc and Santinel and even my friends, Martin and Rozlo.

Hey Vian, we watched you against Honza today that was tough! Rozlo mentioned.

Vian, be careful not to hurt yourself in those robot fights, Vivian sounded worried as always.

Really, you guys were watching, did you see how I turned the fight over and then ripped him apart and then crushed him and then won? I can feel my own pride taking over the room.

Vian that is brutal, I will be restricting your gaming young man! Vivian felt shocked from what I just colourfully explained.

Let the boy have some fun Viv and stop worrying so much, my dad Roger looked Mum in the eyes and pulled her towards him with his arms on her waist, gross.

Isn’t it my job to worry? Vivian pushed Roger back by putting her finger on his nose.

Am, no Mum, not when you know Omniris is super safe, I have a better chance of convincing everyone I’m a chimpanzee.

Alright, alright, now let us have dinner everyone, Vivian.

Creamy, light-cheese and tomato topped chicken, barbeque charcoal-cooked beef ribs, raqui leaf salad, homemade white buns, tomato and cucumber salad, Koribo steaks with Mum’s special sauce, fries and grilled vegetables.

You have outdone yourself Mum! a well-deserved compliment.

Nothing the food printer can’t handle, Vivian chuckled.

Hey brat, what did you put today in that empty head of yours? Gina.

I don’t know to be honest. I feel the same as I did yesterday, those data centres are a scam.

What data uploads did Vian have today, Rikos? Roger.

He got the optimal manual the history manual and the 2nd level piano one, Rikos.

A second level manual? Vivian sounds surprised.

Yes, the keeper said it is fine if it is a musical instrument, Rikos.

I chose the history manual for you Vian because no one in the family has it. And the optimal manual for you to be able to easily grasp the vast world of humanity. What made you choose a piano manual as your 3rd upload? Vivian.

Well Mum, I’ve heard a few melodies that I really enjoyed and was moved by, that is how I decided.

You, moved by something? You don’t even know how to dig your head out the sand, little brother, Linc.

You wouldn’t understand Linc, the only thing that moves you are your lady friends you hang out with, showed him some face gimmicks as well as the truth.

Hey Mum, I think he is actually dumber than before, Linc.

Stop it, both of you, Vivian.

But Mum, I don’t feel anything different after today.

    Okay, everyone ready? Vivian asked.

Everyone in the room slightly smiled and gave Mum a nod.

What is all this about, ready for what?

Vian, would you be so kind to tell me something about our history, as far back as you can think of? Vivian politely asked.

"Of course Mum, where do I start? I will start from the beginning. Humans have lived in the cosmos for around one million years, it all started back on a planet called Earth where humans first appeared as a species. For thousands of years, we were fighting each other over land, women, supplies, power and puny differences. Back then, they knew nothing of space travel and one human lived for an average of 40 years, then passed away in eternity.

With time, people advanced in technology but were separated in different groups and each group had a set of leaders, those groups were called countries. A significant event is the moment when the idea of Omniris aired as a movie, which was foundational for today’s game.

Then one day, people decided to colonise another planet, the planet closest to Earth called Mars. By then, we had discovered the technology to monitor distant galaxies but we were far from figuring out how to travel there. Later people finally united under one leader, which frankly was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made and it stands till this very day.

When we travelled to Mars, that was the moment when it clicked for us, that we will be able to populate more and more planets, we just had to figure out how to get to them.

Later on, we found out how to travel to more distant habitable planets, the technology was somehow related to the energy coming from the stars. Then we colonised planet Obelisk which led to one of the most important discoveries in human history, teleportation. Since then, people are able to teleport from one place to another without having to travel the distance.

After that discovery came to light, we started planning how to build a network of planets and connect them through teleportation. Almost in the same era, another team of scientists discovered how to make humans ‘immortal’, full soul and brain transfer or better said ‘continuity’ into an artificial body.

At first the bodies were white and quite robotic and also had some defects but in time, as technology advanced, the bodies became bio-enhanced and were exact copies of our own bodies. Except, never aging, three times stronger and more durable.

Immortality until something went wrong with the brain that is but it had five times the usual life span which at that time surely felt like immortality. Teleportation and ‘immortality’ what more could people wish for—well.

For the first time, we made contact with other life forms, the Baba, they were quite primitive compared to us and thought we were gods but we managed to find a common tongue and have lived in piece with them ever since. We colonised about thirty planets, met a few species and managed to connect the planets through satellites and teleports, so everyone had the same network and everyone could teleport between planets.

The inter-plane-net connected thirty planets and it was time for a new era of great discoveries. People no longer waged pointless wars, we were only about discoveries and peace; everyone had everything they needed at that time. Some power had to be used here and there and we did build a war force just in case but no major harm done.

Time for machinery. Some of the greatest machines were built and one engineer created an
