When Shell – D’Arcy, a British oil conglomerate exploring oil in Nigeria was formed in the late 1951, it was not long before it ‘spudded’ its first oil wells in Iho Dimeze, a town 10 miles North of Oweri, South East of Nigeria. Those wells are still there, abandoned, so also the town that hosted the owners. My father, Fidelis Okorohuru-Newman Nwanjo was born in this town. He was recruited in this oil field by Shell – D’Arcy which later turned Shell British Petroleum Development Company. He was a Toolpusher and Derricks man for over a decade. His career was ended by the 1967-1970 Nigerian-Biafran civil war. Timeline of my father is the story of his life and his community, his sojourn to then Spanish Fernando Poo, his experience working with Shell BP conglomerate, the influence of Britain in Nigerian’s oil and politics especially her regrettable role in the Nigerian-Biafran civil war that claimed over 3 million lives.
