    Curvylicious Desires - Kendra Summers

    Chapter 1

    Jess

Driving three hours to the mountains from the city, and spending the next week hiking to clear her head, seemed to Jess, like a good idea at the time.

The clear mountain air, verdant greenness, and quiet of nature was a balm to Jess’s soul, and for the first time since graduating law school a couple of weeks back, she could hear herself think properly.

Jess liked to hike at a leisurely pace, drinking in the beauty and sounds of nature – she didn’t particularly care for other hikers who treated the experience as an Olympic sport, and therefore preferred hiking alone.  As she slowly navigated the quiet woods, savoring the feeling of being completely alone, the thoughts that were plaguing her for the last month, returned.

Both Jess’s her parents were respected lawyers, and there was not even a question of Jess not following in their footsteps which was only part of the problem.

Jess sighed loudly, thinking about her parents. Both impossibly good looking, even in their fifties, tall and slender, they looked the power couple that they were. A couple since college, her parents were the dream team of the legal fraternity in their city. Both extroverted, sporty, driven and ambitious, they were the perfectly matched couple.

Their daughter was a source of some bewilderment to them. Of course, they loved Jess, but they could not understand their plump, introverted daughter, who seemed to be nothing like them at all.

Jess was a quiet, dreamy child, who relished curling up with her favorite book, and could while away hours in her bedroom, lost in another world. The only place that fired Jess’s passion was the kitchen.

Her parents good naturedly supported her cooking hobby, and were even impressed when as a teenager, she won several cooking competitions in their area. Once, timidly, she raised the subject of attending chef school, and her mother refused to speak to her for a week thereafter. Jess backed down, and never raised the matter again. Teenagers, her parents reasoned, don’t really know what’s important in life, or what’s good for them.

Jess took a deep breath in as the hurt flooded, as she remembered her mother’s last conversation with her. Jess’s mother took her professional image seriously, and conveyed to her daughter how the corporate world and legal fraternity would view someone, as she put it, didn’t take care of herself. The fact that Jess preferred being make-up free, did her own nails, and was not a huge fan of spending hours at the beauty salon, was not the issue.

The old pain and hurt from Jess’s childhood rose, as she remembered the various diets she had been put on, the promises of money and clothes if she lost weight, the feelings of invalidation and rejection.

Jess's childhood had been a constant battle with her own body. She vividly recalled the never-ending cycle of diets, each one promising a transformation that would finally meet her parents' approval. From counting calories to trying fad diets, she had done it all. Her mother, Stephanie, had been the driving force behind these attempts, convinced that Jess's success hinged on her appearance.

Promises of money and lavish gifts were dangled in front of her like carrots on a stick. If she could only shed those extra pounds, she would be rewarded with something lavish. Designer clothes, luxurious vacations, and the finest jewelry were tantalizing incentives, but they came at a steep price. They came with the underlying message that Jess, in her current state, was not enough. She needed to change, to fit into the mold her parents had crafted for her.

However, material possessions had never held a significant allure for Jess. Despite the allure of these offerings, they were never enough to eclipse the deeper yearning she had for genuine acceptance and love, unencumbered by her physical appearance. The pursuit of her parents' approval had left her with a profound sense of emptiness, as she longed for a connection built on authenticity rather than superficiality.

Each failed attempt at weight loss only intensified her feelings of invalidation and rejection. The constant scrutiny of her body, the pressure to conform to a certain standard of beauty, left scars that ran deeper than the physical ones from the storm. She
