    Chapter 1

    Ethen! Kara laughed. Wait up!

Catch me if you can! Ethen shouted back as he splashed through the pool.

Kara ducked underneath the water and started swimming toward him. As soon as she stood up, she tackled him.

Gotcha! she shouted before taking a quick breath as Ethen pulled her under the water. She knew that she'd taken a breath too quickly, and now she was choking, inhaling water with every cough. She needed air, but before she reached the top, she blacked out.

Beep! Beep! Beep! Kara woke up to the quiet beeping ringing in her ears, or was it loud? She couldn't decide. Her head was spinning in a million different directions with a million questions. What happened? What time is it? How long was I out?

Where am I? Kara didn't realize she'd said it out loud until her parents came rushing to her side along with a doctor…or what looked like her parents and a doctor…she couldn't tell. Everything was very, very blurry. Then it all came rushing back to her. Ethen! Kara shouted and threw off the covers as her vision sharpened, then she collapsed.

Kara's dad picked her up and set her back on the bed, putting the covers on her again as Kara's mom said, He's fine, in another room, but fine. You need to rest. Her mom was stern, but her voice was soft, like Kara would break if she spoke too loudly.

    But…

    You'll see him later, okay?

    What happened to him?

He just inhaled a bit of water. Now rest.

Fine, Kara sighed. Can I at least have some water?

All right, I'll go get you some, her mom said, smiling.

Actually, it would be ice chips, not water, the male doctor said, laughing. Then he walked to the other side of the room. The doctor sauntered back with a cup that Kara could only assume held the ice chips. Once Kara was done eating a few, the doctor made her take some medicine, which instantly made her tired.

Don't worry, you'll be out of here by the time you wake up, the doctor said. Then she fell asleep.

Kara shot up into a sitting position, wide awake. She glanced around, realizing she was now in her room. Her gaze settled on her alarm clock. It's only two thirty. Go back to sleep, Kara whispered to herself as she lay back down, but she couldn't stop thinking about her strange dream.

She'd dreamed about being able to control water and about fighting these people…what did she call them? Gah! she let out a frustrated sigh. Kara knew it was just a dream, but it felt as if it was more than that.

Kara opened her eyes to the sound of her alarm clock going off. She must have fallen back asleep while she was thinking about the dream. She threw her blanket off herself and dashed downstairs to pour herself a bowl of cereal and a glass of orange juice. However, the dream seized her thoughts, and she almost forgot to stop pouring the juice.

Fifteen hours after the accident and I'm already having strange dreams, Kara thought as she put the milk and juice in the fridge. Then she headed out the door to catch the bus to school.

Hey, Ethen! Kara said as she caught up to Ethen during their lunch break.

    Hey! he replied back.

I had the strangest dream last night.

Whoa, me too! He raised his eyebrow in suspicion. What did you dream about?

Kara crossed her arms and gave him the how dare you look, answering him, Well, I could give you all the details, but I'll just sum it up.

    Okay, he shrugged.

So, basically, it was about me controlling water and fighting this evil group! Ethen opened his mouth to reply, but Kara cut him off, And before you say anything, it felt as if it was more than a dream. I don't care how crazy it sounds. Ethen started tapping the table with his fingers as she continued, I know what I'm feeling. Kara crossed her arms again.

    You done?

    Yes, she huffed.

Okay, so first, you don't really make sense right now, but I understand where you're coming from…mostly because I would probably explain my dream the same way. It was Kara's
