About this ebook

- Romana Grimm Writes Science Fiction As Morgan Cross -

All the historical data make successful First Contact missions seem so materially and emotionally rewarding. Something to which every intelligent population in the universe ought to aspire.

So what is a group of interstellar travelers to do when their long-planned visit to dull little planet Earth proves unexpectedly fraught with danger?

Is it really worth it to invite humanity to the coveted Federation of Planets With Intelligent Lifeforms when even the nicest specimen of said intelligent life has the potential to easily wipe out their crew? Or will the 1187th time be the time to end the hitherto unfortunate string of First Contact attempts and admit defeat at last?

    FIRST-0

THE CAPTAIN LOOKED approvingly at the holographic images in the middle of his bridge.

Nicely sized planet. Color a vibrant blue. Covered at exactly 71,8% with the substance termed ‘water’ by native life forms. There is a significant increase in its liquid state, compared to the R’legs’ logs from what the humans call the year 1902. Several adverse weather phenomena currently at play. Floodings, forest fires, storms. Concerning, and not an auspicious starting point for the 1187. first contact mission of the Federation of Planets with Intelligent Lifeforms.

Very concerning, his XO agreed. Scans show a marked disinterest in the health of the commonly shared resources by the dominant species. The whole planet is suffering from severe neglect and abuse. Lifeform diversity distinctly less rich than during First Contact Nr. 1186 in the modern Earth year of 1902.

The vessel’s chief science officer shook their beautifully bulbous, yellow-and-turquoise-spotted head disapprovingly. Yet another world in dire need of saving. Not sure if they’ll appreciate our efforts. They never did before.

Not even during their ‘heyday’ after discovering the many uses of electricity, the XO agreed and bent his two long forefingers in a facsimile of the human’s ‘quotation marks’, a gesture solely invented to convey sarcasm.

The captain twitched his ear antenna. Just one caught transmission of something the humans called ‘sitcom’ about a hundred standard star time intervals ago and proper conduct went up the priitz’aah. Such foolishness.

We will observe double the mandated amount of time before proceeding, he decided at length as moving pictures of countless natural disasters, acts of war, and general desolation filled the room with their gloominess. "It seems that things haven’t improved much since the last attempt at first
