CHAPTER 1. JESSIE

I was late. Like beyond late, but that isn’t the issue. The issue is that the Aberdeen meeting was rescheduled without any consideration for anyone’s time. Even their damn sanity. Who does Alex Martine think he is?

The Aberdeen client was mine. I’ve been working for them for years. Well, the client was technically not mine. They belonged to the firm, but everyone knew ‘to go to Jessie,’ when the Aberdeens came calling.

And call they do. For like everything. Blog posts, catalogs, sale banners. Even minor changes to the font on their website. Hell, I don’t even know how the Aberdeens managed their multi-million dollar jewelry business, but they do. And had been doing it a lot longer than we’d been running our firm, but the old couple loved me. And I earned every cent of my bonuses, and every drop of their sweet admiration.

Then here comes Alex Martine. Fresh off some corporate job. Coming to our little boutique firm, thinking he knows better.

Ouch! I just banged my foot.

I think I’m bleeding.

I hate Mondays.

But back to my rant. The man has balls. Big ones. I’ll give him that. But I, Jessie Santos, don’t take crap from anyone. Especially days before I launch a holiday campaign I’ve been working on for three grueling months, where the line between hours worked and hours slept was cruelly marginalized.

My phone rings and I race for it across my bedroom. Stockings hang around my ankle in a way that’s sure to give them a run with the luck I’m having today.

Hi, Sam. I answer.

Jessie, morning. Saw the email he sent out. When did that happen?

Her melodic voice rang in my ear with intrigue.

It never happened. Matter of fact, this is the last time it’ll happen. That asshole doesn’t know who he is messing with.

I pull one stocking up and my button pops open, my cleavage bursting out. I grunt. Is anything going right today?

Relax Jess, we’re in the middle of a takeover. Well, not officially. You know Simon is handing the reins over to this guy soon. He’s been messing with my department, too.

Finance? Really? Does he do everything? He needs to stomp on everyone’s toes. Why did Simon hire some psychotic know it all?

Sam’s low laughs make my face flush.

It’s not funny. I say, while sucking in my stomach to pull up the rest of my pantyhose.

It is. A little. You get so worked up.

It’s called dedication.

It’s called hysteria.

It’s called fuck you.

Save it for the ring, champ.

We laugh and I feel the tenseness ease out of my shoulders gradually.

Where would I work without you? I ask sweetly.
