The Arts And Crafts Author - Deborah Wirsu
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the exciting world of writing an arts and crafts book! If you’re someone with a passion for a particular craft, or a craft teacher or blogger, it’s likely that, at some time, you’ve thought about writing a book. But what if you have no idea where to begin, or the thought of writing and self-publishing your book seems like a stretch too far?
As a creative individual with a passion for your chosen craft, you have a vast store of knowledge that is worth sharing. Whether it’s knitting, sewing, painting, woodworking, quilting, pottery, basket weaving, glassblowing, or any other creative endeavour, your expertise and skill mean that you create beautiful and unique works of art.
Why not share your passion with a wider audience by writing a book?
Many people reading this may already host art and craft classes and workshops. Or perhaps you’re an enthusiastic hobbyist who’s amassed an arsenal of skills over the years.
Either way, you’re knowledgeable, experienced, and respected by people in your community who seek your advice on techniques, strategies, or materials.
But how do you turn that expertise and passion into a successful book?
It can be done. And it’s easier than you may think.
Although writing and self-publishing a book can seem daunting, this book will guide you step-by-step through everything you need to know to take your book from concept to completion.
I was a newcomer to self-publishing when I wrote my first arts and crafts book—green around the gills, you might say! What I did have, however, was a lifetime of crafting and teaching skills that I wanted to share with as many people as possible.
Although I’d been blogging for years, hosted classes, and written course manuals, I’d never self-published a book. And the process of self-publishing was a mystery. But these things are easily learned. Now, I’m proud to be a 4-time best-selling author with five self-published arts and crafts books (plus several books on other topics) under my belt.
Here’s the thing, if I can do it, so can you. I came to writing and self-publishing with no background in IT, the publishing industry or marketing. Begin this journey with an open mind and willingness to take on new challenges.
Imagine the excitement and pride of holding your book in your hand. Take it from me; it’s especially thrilling the first time. And the excitement of receiving each new book never wanes. Think how excited you’ll be when that precious parcel arrives, knowing that your books are helping people explore new topics, learn new skills, and discover their own unique talents for a surprising range of techniques.
The Good News
Here’s the good news: with the right guidance and tools (and an ounce of patience and determination), you can turn your hobby into a bestselling book that helps people, showcases your skills, and generates income.
This book will guide you through the entire process of creating a high-quality, self-published book that will stand out in the competitive market.
This book shows you how to:
Identify your unique topic and style.
Understand market demand and competition.
Plan a structure and layout that’s best for your topic.
Write your book.
Edit and proofread your book.
Photography tips for arts and crafts authors.
Format your book for self-publishing.
Cover design essentials.
How to write a great book description.
How to navigate the self-publishing process.
Promote your book effectively to reach a global audience and make more sales.
By the end of the book, you’ll have all the knowledge, tools, and essential steps required to turn your hobby or expertise into a best-selling arts and crafts book.
Time to get started!
Let’s take things one step at a time. Throughout the book, you’ll find helpful hints and useful structures for a variety of different ‘How to’, DIY, and Self-help books. I’ll hold your hand every step of the way, helping you progressively conceive, write, and publish your book.
I’m so thrilled that you’re here, and I hope you are, too!
Each chapter walks you through specific things you need to know and (importantly) the steps you must take at that stage. By working through each step, you’ll have a finished arts and crafts book to be proud of.
Now all that’s left is to get started!
1
IDENTIFYING YOUR TOPIC AND STYLE
It’s often said that the best authors write about what they know, and while this isn’t always true, in the world of arts and crafts it’s a smart approach. Your readers will trust you more if they sense your authenticity and expertise.
As a creative artist or craftsperson, you have an advantage when writing a book about your passion. However, with so many potential topics, narrowing your focus and identifying a specific topic for your first book can take time.
CHOOSING A WINNING TOPIC
The best way to get started writing an arts and crafts book is to choose one specific topic or technique and focus on that. It’s much easier to write a ‘How to’ or Self-help book when you’re not trying to cover several ideas at once.
Most writers dipping their toe into the crafts niche for the first time are either professional artists, teachers, or passionate hobbyists who love to work on specific types of projects. So, it’s likely you already have a good idea of what you want to write about.
For example, if you specialise in knitting pullovers or jumpers using colourful, contemporary designs, then a book that focuses on your style, technique, or patterns would be a great place to begin. Perhaps your hobby is photography, in particular, flowers or insects, so a book that helps beginner photographers interested in that style would be a good fit. A bonus is that your first book can easily lead into a book series covering increasingly complex strategies.
NOT SURE WHERE TO START?
But what if you’re still not sure where to start? In that case, think about what you love to create, your favourite technique, or projects that push conventional boundaries. Even if your idea uses a well-known technique that’s been written about many times, you still have an opportunity to present your ideas in a different way. For example, if you’re writing a book about
