About this ebook

Although "He" enjoyed playing the game and tried to avenge his beautiful daughter's death, Phillip's plan failed. First, he stalked Samantha and purposely put her into a state of emotional anguish. Then he got Jill, Samantha's best friend and office assistant, involved so there was no way out for Jill, but to do exactly as he said. Phillip had kidnapped and beaten Samantha, then buried her alive for the purpose of making her suffer like he had when she took his beautiful daughter, Heather, from him. In the future, he'd have to take more time with Samantha and make sure he was the reason she was taking her final breath.

    I would also like to thank my husband, Ken Whitten, who has continued to support me, give me suggestions and whose love helped me find the words to express myself. He has given me the courage and opportunity to explore my talents. I love you so much!

    Prologue

    Although He enjoyed the game and tormenting Samantha, Phillip knew the time was perfect to avenge his daughter’s death. Heather was only sixteen when she took her own life. Samantha and Heather had been best friends for most their lives, but when they got into high school, their friendship grew apart. Heather made a choice that changed her whole life and the lives of strangers. She had no one to watch her back and ended up drinking too much at a party. Heather didn’t realize she was in danger because she was amongst friends…at least that’s what she thought.

    * * *

    Suddenly, Heather was forced into a bedroom with several different boys. They decided she was an easy target and when they had finished with her, they took her to the backyard and left her next to the garbage. When word got around at school about Heather, the whispers and looks were more than she could handle. Teenagers can be so cruel and judgmental. For months Heather put up with the whispers, finger pointing and stares. The gossip spread like a wildfire in a fierce wind storm. Heather’s nickname became garbage girl. No matter what she did to try to stop the bullying, it continued. Finally, the only way out of her misery was to end the suffering. Heather took an entire bottle of pills. She had her whole life ahead of her, but she couldn’t see beyond the current shame, embarrassment and bullying.

    * * *

    Unbeknownst to Samantha, Phillip stalked her for many years and enjoyed the games he played with her mind. She never knew who was in her house leaving her notes, who had turned off the heat, or followed her wherever she went. And then there was the cigarette smoke. It seemed to linger in her bedroom, in the den and at work. The only time Phillip didn’t follow her, was when she was in court with her clients.

    * * *

    Samantha became a successful defensive attorney with her own law practice and every goal she achieved, only reminded Phillip what had been taken away from Heather. Samantha had her career, a home, friends, and was working her way to becoming the state of Massachusetts most sought-after attorney. Heather was only a memory; an example to many high school kids what bullying can do to someone.

    * * *

    Phillip hated Samantha and her success!

    * * *

    He would never get to walk his daughter down the aisle and watch her loving groom’s reaction when he saw her. He’d never be a grandpa or have another family holiday dinner. He was alone and had nothing to live for except REVENGE.

    * * *

    Phillip had arranged to kidnap Samantha. On that fateful New Year’s Eve, he started to put his plan into action. Phillip beat, raped, and buried Samantha alive. His plan was to leave her in the wooden box he built for her, until she died. Then he was going to dump her body in the ocean where she’d become fish food. Unfortunately, Jill and Tom saved Samantha just in time. The doctors stated she was only minutes away from dying.

    * * *

    Tom is a handsome man, who has a secret life. He’s been an undercover cop for the last seven years trying to infiltrate one of the most notorious Mafia families; the Drucci’s. He had worked his way up into the organization and Giovanni, the head of the family, thought of him like a son. Tom collected money from the businesses in town and assisted where he was needed. His title was, the Enforcer. Tom became like a son to Giovanni and as he began to trust Tom, Giovanni gave him more and more responsibilities.

    * * *

    Giovanni hired Samantha to defend his son, Vinnie. Vinnie was charged with murdering a reporter who had been following the family. She was ready to blow the organization wide open when she was found dead from an apparent overdose. After several weeks, the verdict came back guilty. Vinnie was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Giovanni was enraged! He blamed Samantha and put a contract hit out on her.

    * * *

    Tom knew he had to warn this woman about the contract. He’d followed her around town to see where the best place was to meet so he could explain to her what was going on. She needed to be able to defend herself. When Tom and Samantha met, he was surprised at her beauty. Tom didn’t know who Giovanni had hired to kill Samantha, but he did know it wasn’t a matter of if the contract would be completed, but when.

    * * *

    Tom was considered a loner because he didn’t like to depend on other people. He’d been let down so many times as a young man, so he found interests where he only needed to rely on himself. He loved his work and sailing. From the first moment he saw Samantha, he knew he’d been missing out on so much. Never before had he thought of anything or anyone else but his work. Samantha was beautiful and her smile contagious. Her long brown hair and amazing green eyes gave her an exotic look that was mesmerizing. She was taller than the women Tom had been involved with in the past, and her intellect was intriguing. Samantha was slender and carried herself well. There was definitely a chemistry between them that he couldn’t deny.

    * * *

    Jill, Samantha’s office assistant, who became her best friend was sweet, caring, and ran the office effortlessly. Samantha considered herself lucky when Jill came into her office and asked for a job. Although Jill didn’t have any experience with the legal system or in administration, Samantha had a feeling about her and took a chance on hiring Jill. What Samantha didn’t know, was that Phillip was behind Jill wanting to get a job as an assistant for Samantha. Phillip led Jill to believe he had her family under surveillance and would have them killed if she didn’t cooperate with him and get a job with Samantha. Once Jill was hired, Phillip forced her to set Samantha up. Jill got copies of Samantha’s house and office keys so Phillip could come and go as he pleased. Because of Jill, Samantha was emotionally tormented and physically attacked by Phillip.

    * * *

    Phillip had planned his revenge on Samantha for years. He loved watching her, following her, getting into her house and turning off the heat and moving things around in her office. Sometimes he even followed her to her parent’s home in Maine. He had nothing to do but to torment Samantha and enjoyed watching her confusion and doubts when he played the game of hide and seek. Soon he was going to succeed in obtaining his final revenge, and this time neither Tom nor Jill will be able to stop him.

    * * *

    Samantha was going to be his…one way or another!

    Chapter 1

    Although He enjoyed playing the game and tried to avenge his beautiful daughter’s death, Samantha managed to come out of it alive. First, Phillip stalked her and purposely put her into a state of emotional anguish. Then he got Jill, Samantha’s best friend and office assistant, involved so there was no way out for Jill, but to do exactly as he said. In the future, he’d have to take more time with Samantha and make sure he was the reason she was taking her final breath. Phillip had kidnapped and beaten Samantha, then buried her alive for the purpose of making her suffer like he did when she took his beautiful daughter, Heather, from him.

    * * *

    He was seeking revenge…sweet, carefully planned, REVENGE.

    * * *

    Most people thought Samantha to be strikingly beautiful with her long auburn hair and bright green eyes. Although she was tall for a woman, she carried herself well. Samantha was never afraid to wear high heels even though they sometimes put her well over six feet tall. Samantha was comfortable wearing jeans and a sweatshirt or a business suit. No matter what she wore, she looked amazing. When she spoke, she projected her voice with authority and caused people take notice and pay attention. That was part of what made her a good attorney. Samantha’s laugh was contagious as was her enthusiasm for life. Some would say she was a realist and others an optimist.

    * * *

    As Phillip stood at the foot of Samantha’s bed in the ICU, he hardly recognized the woman lying helplessly hooked to machines. The room smelled of bleach and there was hardly any light in the room except for the neon numbers flashing to the beat of Samantha’s heart. Her bed was laid flat with the sheet and blanket neatly tucked in around her still body. In the corner was a small sink with a mirror. Looking into the mirror, Phillip could see the reflection of Samantha’s tortured body. There was no door leading in or out of her room, but instead, a sliding glass door. This allowed the nurses to be able to see what might be going on in Samantha’s room as they walked by to assist other patients.

    Phillip knew Samantha to be a gorgeous woman and now there wasn’t any features that bore a resemblance of her. Her beautiful auburn hair had a tint of crimson from the dried blood. Her eyes were swollen shut, she had no sign of visible cheekbones and her complexion was mostly black and blue. Her stillness was pleasing to Phillip as he looked at her lifeless body and smiled. Soon she was going to be at his mercy and he was not a merciful man.

    Phillip didn’t want to stay long. He couldn’t take the chance on someone seeing him, but he needed to see for himself, Samantha indeed made it out alive. He hated the thought that she was rescued just in time.

    Frustrated and angry that Samantha was alive, Phillip walked over to the side of her bed and whispered in her ear, You were rescued this time but soon you will be mine and no one will know where I’ve taken you or what I’m going to do with you. Phillip turned and slipped out of Samantha’s room. He needed to think. How was he going to take what was rightfully his? Phillip walked out of Samantha’s room trying to figure out the details of his plan.

    The hallway was eerily empty. There were no nurses walking from room to room, no visitors, no one. When Phillip reached the elevator, the door opened and he almost ran into a couple who were trying to get off the elevator. The woman was shockingly pale and most likely ill. Her eyes were red and slightly swollen as though she’d been crying. As they got off and he in, Phillip knew how he was going to kill Samantha. Smiling, he pressed the button to the first floor.

    * * *

    Samantha’s hospital room was full of equipment which told a story of its own. As Betty sat next to her daughter and held her hand, she closed her eyes and said a silent prayer. Betty was a small woman. Her husband would jokingly call her Mighty Mouse. Although she was small in stature, there was a time she could hold her own if need be. Lately, she was so frail. She had been diagnosed with cancer and by the time they found it, the cancer had spread throughout her body. Betty’s eyes had dark circles under them. She hadn’t gotten much sleep since she and her husband, Andrew, got into town. Her complexion was quite pale and alarmingly transparent. Betty refused any traditional treatments and started with a naturalist. She wanted to enjoy the time she had left.

    * * *

    Unfortunately, her daughter went missing shortly after her diagnosis so enjoying life was not something that came easily at that time. The worst nightmare a parent could imagine was coming true for Betty and Andrew. Samantha had to have emergency surgery to repair several facial fractures and she’d been buried alive. The doctors decided to put her into a medically induced coma while her body was trying to repair itself.

    * * *

    Andrew stood on the other side of his daughter’s bed and carefully watched each number on the monitor as it changed. He didn’t have any family left, except Betty and Samantha. He was not only concerned for his daughter, but also for his wife who was fighting her own battle for life. Betty was diagnosed a couple of months before Samantha was kidnapped. Betty was focusing on her own health until Samantha went missing. Now, that was the furthest thing from her mind.

    * * *

    Andrew lost his parents when they were in a horrific car accident. He was five years old and remembered being in the car with his deceased parents for some time before help arrived. After that, Andrew lived in several, different foster homes. He became a loner and didn’t trust people. Andrew was a tall man with a rather muscular frame for his age. He was Italian and French, but was pretty easy going. He had an odd sense of humor when he used it. There wasn’t anything that set him apart from any other man except his height. He was quiet and a man of few words. Andrew met Manny Drucci on a construction site. Manny became a mentor for Andrew. He taught him everything he knew about the construction business. It wasn’t until they became partners that Andrew learned Manny’s cousin was the head of the Drucci mob family. Andrew and Manny’s partnership flourished as did their friendship. When Manny died and Betty was diagnosed with cancer, Andrew sold the business so he could focus on helping his wife.

    * * *

    The continuous beeping of the heart monitor proved Samantha was still alive although looking at her, one would assume she was deceased. Her face was unrecognizable. Her eyes were black and blue and swollen shut. Her cheekbones and nose disappeared within the significant swelling of her face. Betty and Andrew couldn’t even recognize their own daughter when they walked into her room. Samantha’s facial bones had to be reconstructed because of the beating Phillip gave her. Machines were keeping her alive.

    * * *

    Suddenly, alarms blasted out in warning. Betty jumped and gasped at the same time. Andrew, what’s going on? Betty asked very much shaken.

    * * *

    Andrew stepped away from Samantha’s bed, at the same time his eyes went to the heart monitor that was connected to his daughter. Several nurses and hospital staff burst into the room. The piercing sound from the monitor’s alarm was deafening. Along with the sound, was the visual straight line that was moving across the screen. In horror, Samantha’s parents watched for any signs of life.

    * * *

    By all definitions, Samantha was dead.

    * * *

    A nurse escorted Betty and Andrew out of their daughter’s hospital room while explaining to them what was happening. They stood out in the hall and listened to the doctor calling out orders. The hospital staff moved about the room with the same goal in mind…to bring Samantha back to life.

    * * *

    The scene was like a finely choreographed dance. Each staff member had their own job to do. The doctor would call out instructions, while nurses were lowering the bed, filling syringes with medication to stimulate the heart and charging the defibrillator.

    * * *

    Clear! Dr. Arnold shouted. Everyone stepped away from Samantha as he used the paddles from the defibrillator to jump start her heart. All eyes and ears were on the monitor. The heart rate remained unchanged. The tension and adrenalin were so thick, you could cut it with a knife.

    * * *

    Clear! For a second time Dr. Arnold shocked Samantha’s heart into some kind of rhythm. Although there wasn’t much room to move around, no one got into each other’s way. They were a team; moving as though they were one person. Soon, the alarms were quieted, leads were double checked and all seemed back to the way it was. Betty and Andrew watched in anticipation as one by one, the medical staff left Samantha’s room.

    * * *

    The last nurse walked out and looking at Betty and Andrew, gave them a smile and said, She’s okay. It’s obvious she’s a fighter and wants to live. The emergency is over now, so you can relax a little.

    * * *

    As Betty turned her attention back to her daughter, she sat back down next to Samantha’s bed. Holding her daughter’s hand Betty began telling Samantha what was going on.

    * * *

    Honey, you’ve been through a difficult time, but you just need to work on getting better. Don’t be afraid. Dad and I will be with you until you wake up, Betty’s eyes filled with tears. Jill and Tom wouldn’t give up looking for you and it was actually they who managed to find you just in time. The paramedics said you only had a few minutes left before you would have died. Jill’s been a godsend. She’s been taking your calls at the office and scheduled your clients out a few months. Those who are in trial now, were released to another attorney. Jill’s been here to see you every day, even though she’s trying to keep your practice going. She sits here while your dad and I get something to eat or get freshened up. We’re staying at your house and I’ve been really careful about watering your plants. I know you have a green thumb and are proud of how healthy they are. I’ll try to make sure they stay just as healthy until you can come take care of them yourself. Jill has Molly. I think Jill is happy to have her because she reminds her of you and Jill really misses you. Please don’t worry about anything except getting better.

    Jill was Samantha’s office assistant and friend. She was just under five feet tall and wore a size zero. She was so small that many people would mistake her for a child until they saw her face. Jill was a natural red head with big brown eyes. Her skin tone wasn’t pale like most red-heads, because she had so many freckles, it looked like she was permanently tan. Jill was finishing up her studies to be a social worker and until Phillip found her, she planned on a long career in the Social Services agency with the state.

    Jill met Phillip at a coffee shop they both frequented. When he saw Jill everyday having coffee, he began to devise his plan to kill Samantha. He’d need someone to assist him with the fine details and he chose Jill. Phillip followed Jill around for weeks to learn her routine and find out about her parents and siblings. She was going to be his co-conspirator in his plot to kill Samantha.

    When Phillip was at Moonbeams Coffee Shop one day, he walked up to Jill and said, Hey, do you mind if I sit here? Pointing to the chair next to her. My name’s Phillip. Phillip held out his hand to Jill.

    Jill looked up from her laptop and smiled at him. Sure. She replied as she shook Phillip’s hand, then continued with her work.

    I’ve noticed you’re here every day. I thought I was the only one who needed to own stock in this coffee shop. Phillip was piling on the charm. He hoped to get Jill to engage in conversation with him so he would be able to begin his plan.

    Um, yes. I wish I did have stock in this store. Jill was becoming annoyed because she had a paper she needed to finish and he was interrupting her concentration.

    So, Jill, do you like your Chevy? Phillip said. He could sense how uncomfortable and confused he’d made her and that excited him. He loved shocking people.

    Do I know you? Jill really looked at Phillip for the first time.

    "No Miss, you don’t. But I know you and I know where you and your dad work, where your brother and sister go to school, what church your family attends and most of your friends. You see Jill, I know more about you and your family than anyone else. So, I suggest you listen very carefully. I need you to do something for me and as long as you do exactly as I say your family will be safe. But the minute you try to deviate from my instructions, I will destroy them. Don’t try to involve the police, I have connections and will know immediately.

    Jill put her laptop down and questioned Phillip. Who are you and why me?

    Don’t you think you should be asking me what I want you to do? Phillip leaned in toward Jill.

    I don’t understand why you would want to hurt my family. I’m just a student. I’m not anyone important. Jill was still confused but she needed to find out what this guy wanted. So, she asked the important question this creep wanted her to ask.

    Okay, I’ll bite. What do you need me to do?

    Good decision. I want you to go to see Samantha Stover. She’s just opening up her own law firm and looking for an office assistant. You will go apply for the job and get hired. When you’ve accomplished that task, I’ll let you know what the next step will be. Phillip was enjoying this conversation.

    I’ve never worked for an attorney. I don’t know anything about the legal system and won’t she expect me to know what I’m doing? Jill asked confused about the whole idea.

    Well, I suggest you make her think you know what you’re doing and what an asset you will be for her. As an incentive, think about your family. If you don’t get hired, your family will die. I can make it look like an accident, maybe homicide, suicide. So, make sure you and Samantha become employer, employee. Understand? Phillip told Jill as he handed her a piece of paper. Here’s Samantha’s address. She will be interviewing people at her office starting tomorrow. Make sure you’re there. When I get ahold of you, you’ll meet me when I ask and where I ask. Have I made myself clear? Phillip said as he glared at Jill.

    Yes. Jill had no idea how much Phillip was going to change her life forever.
