    Part I

    Ohio-1982

The wind gently blew against the American Flag that lay gently on the casket. Guy, holding tightly onto the cane at his side, stared at his father’s casket, images of his father, who tried to save his son, save him from that grocery store robbery. Michael Alexander Russell was an Ohio State Highway Patrol officer, and he was off-duty and on his way home. Michael had just spent the last two hours on a hot Saturday afternoon with his son at the shooting range. This was their typical Saturday. Michael raised Guy after his wife, Jolene, died during childbirth. Michael taught Guy everything he knew about weaponry and self-defense. He knew Guy would be better to know about it so he could always protect himself.

Michael and Guy walked into the small local grocery store; Guy headed to the meat department to get their Saturday evening steaks, and Michael headed to produce. The two would meet at the dairy section.

As the two met and started to walk down the aisle toward the cashiers. Michael grabbed Guy by the shoulder and led him to stand behind him. The two masked-gunman entered the grocery store, one headed toward the cashiers and the other aimed the shotgun at each of the security cameras. He shot the two out, and turned, noticing Michael. Startled, he aimed at Michael, and fired.

The shooters quickly grabbed the cash from the cashier, and then shot the young man. The other shooter shot the manager who was walking out of the customer service office.

Michael fell backwards on top of Guy, as the bullet exploded against his body, and entered his chest. It kept going, landing in Guy’s hip.

Two weeks later, Guy looked around the cemetery and eyed his grandmother. He knew she could not handle losing her son. He didn’t even know if she would try to take care of him. Hell, he didn’t need it. He could do it. He would make his father proud. He may have been 16, but he knew he could do it. His father had the perfect Police Burial, complete with the handing over of the American Flag from the casket to the 21-gun salute. Guy waited until everyone left, and then he shed his tears.

Guy recovered from the hip injury, but it prevented him from entering both the service, and the police academy. Guy got himself emancipated once he got his job at the shooting range. After hours, he trained himself, determined to do something, anything he could to serve his country, and make Michael proud.

And he did. He even made himself proud.

    Part II

    January 1991- Kuwait

Dust filled the sandy air, as Lieutenant Anderson strode quickly into the large command center tent. His eyes darted around the room and focused on the man sitting in the corner, his feet propped up on a water barrel. He was the only man that didn’t stand and salute the commander. Russell, front and center, he commanded.

Guy Russell or Russ as he preferred to be called, was a Civilian Consultant, at least that’s what
