An unsolved case. A tempest of memories. The future’s at stake—and time is running out . . .
Gwen Marcey has done a good job keeping the pain of her past boxed up. But as she investigates the case of a missing child in Lapwai, Idaho, details keep surfacing that are eerily similar to her childhood traumas. She doesn’t believe in coincidences. So what’s going on here?
No one knows more about the impact of the past than the Nez Perce people of Lapwai. Gwen finds herself an unwelcome visitor to some, making her investigation even more difficult. The questions keep piling up, but answers are slow in coming—and the clock is ticking for a missing little girl. Meanwhile, Gwen’s ex-husband is threatening to take sole custody of their daughter.
As Gwen’s past and present collide, she’s in a desperate race for the truth. Because only truth will ensure she still has a future.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The first few pages pulled me in right away. The scene was horrific and it made my skin crawl. From that moment on, I was completely immersed in the characters and where the story would lead them. The author teases the readers a bit with the opening by giving a glimpse into the dark world of unbelievable terror. I loved the details and couldn’t stop reading.Gwen fascinated me right away. She had survived something horrible in her childhood but seemed pretty stable and very focused on her new job. Having a specialty with the police department is quite an achievement, but not everyone is impressed with her. Did anyone wonder why she was so quick to volunteer for a case that involved the disappearance of a child? The similarities of the case and her childhood have piqued her interest. Will she be able to handle this case, or will it cause her to have nightmares? I loved the way the author described Gwen’s job as a forensic artist. As she listens to the witness, she is able to draw an image that eerily resembles the suspect. Her determination was uncanny and I loved her strong ability to continue on as her memories began to open up wounds that could hurt her. The tension runs high throughout the book and Gwen finds herself in danger . Is she getting to close to the truth? I really enjoyed the story and loved how Gwen stood strong on her faith. I know that is what helped her keep moving forward in finding out the truth. This is a story that oozes with intrigue and twists that capture the writing of an exceptional author. I love her writing style and how she takes a character to the limits of danger without overdoing it. Gwen is a character that I can relate to on a personal level. Having been through something traumatic myself, I appreciate how her character was written with strength and survival. I’m glad she keeps it together and doesn’t play victim. This is one book that you must read if you love suspense and excellent characters.I received a copy of this book from The Fiction Guild. The review is my own opinion.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Title: Portrait of Vengeance (Gwen Marcey #4)Author: Carrie Stuart ParksPages: 311Year: 2017Publisher: Thomas NelsonMy rating is 5 out of 5 stars.Gwen Marcey has finally gotten a full-time job, although she is on probation for four weeks until she can earn her first paycheck. She volunteers to take a case that really doesn’t appear to need a forensic artist, but is eerily like events from Gwen’s past. She arrives in Idaho at the Nez Perce Reservation to begin helping the local police force in a double homicide. Two parents of been brutally murdered and their 4-year-old daughter has gone missing. As Gwen works the case, she begins having flashbacks of memories from her own childhood and thinks that maybe what happened in her past could be linked to what is going on now. This is a hard sell to the local police chief. When Gwen starts to follow leads on her own case instead of the double homicide case, the chief lets Gwen’s boss know that she has missed some interview appointments and is distracted.Gwen and her best friend Beth who has come along to act as Watson to Gwen’s Sherlock research cases from surrounding states that have a similar set of circumstances. What they uncover leads them to believe the killer is someone Gwen knows and he/she is wanting Gwen to find out his/her identity. Gwen also is trying to solve the mystery of her past. As she gets closer to the truth, more attempts on her life are made. Gwen refuses to give up, but will her refusal cost her life?I have thoroughly enjoyed this entire series and would highly recommend it to anyone! I find the writing style of the author easy to follow and the main character real and down-to-earth. The author really brings her artistic nature to the story in her descriptions using the names of lots of colors I’ve never heard of, but expanded my knowledge in that matter. Gwen is a survivor. She never gives up. She digs and digs until she finds the truth. She is willing to risk her life and knows to Whom her life is devoted to. Her faith has played an ever-increasing role in her life and I liked watching that aspect of her character mature. I love Gwen’s sense of humor and her friendship with Beth. I’m always excited when I see a new book in this series is coming out, so grab some of the excitement and get ready for plenty of action and suspense!Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog.
