Biography of Catherine De Medici
Catherine de' Medici was born in Renaissance Italy on April 13, 1519. She was raised in the city of Florence. Her mother was Madeleine de La Tour d'Auvergne, Countess of Boulogne. She was from a noble family and descended from a powerful French family with ties to the ruling class. Her father was Lorenzo de' Medici, who was Duke of Urbino and ruled Florence from 1516 to 1519. Lorenzo didn't come from a noble family as his wife did. Still, the Medici family became famous in the 1430s after making a lot of money in banking and gaining power by lending money to several European royal families. The Medicis supported the cultural Renaissance in Florence, and from 1434 to 1737, they were in charge of the city. Several Medicis became Pope, including Catherine, and many married well-known people.
Several Medicis became Pope, including Catherine, and many married well-known people. Before Catherine was born, her parents had been married for a year. Because of her father's background, people thought of Catherine as a noblewoman but not a member of the top Italian aristocracy. But her family had a lot of power, money, and influence, which would help Catherine find a good match when she was old enough to get married. Catherine was an only child who was left without a family soon after birth.
