Space Legends - Resistance (Serialization Episodes 1-5) - Brandon J. Wysocki

    Prologue

"In an infinite and eternal universe, what could be more haunting than mortality?"

Huddled behind large storage crates, Zaeleth had slid a small bag of equipment behind a container that was in the direction he had tried to leave. A modest puddle of blood pooled at his right hip. He anxiously clutched the detonator in his left hand. Surviving no longer appeared to be a possibility, at least not for him. He knew there was no greater sacrifice than for one to surrender their own life for the lives of others, and that now seemed to be the best, perhaps only, option left.

With his wristcom close to his mask, he whispered into it. If you can hear me, I need you all to get out now. His breathing was uneasy. He tried to remain vigilant as he again attempted to alert the others. Please. This is it. If anyone is hearing this, get off this ship…now! he said quietly but sternly.

It had come to this. With the press of a button, he could deal a crippling blow to the massive and dangerous vessel. However, it would now almost certainly cost his life and jeopardize the lives of those who had fought alongside him, as well as numerous innocent souls who had been forced aboard the ship. In that dreadful decision, through that ultimate sacrifice, though it would be the end for him and those with him, countless lives might be saved – further catastrophic conflicts might be averted.

He had often wondered what, if anything, might come after death. He couldn’t help but feel that he was soon to find out. In his heart, he hoped he would be reunited with the many loved ones he had lost, and there he would await the loved ones he would be leaving behind. Deep down, he believed it would all simply end. All that ever was, or might have been, would cease to exist in an instant for him. He began to tremble, but that only served to remind him how important this was.

He looked over to the service hatch and slowly rose to his feet. He again began breathing deeply, trying to steady both his mind and body. He peeked around his cover and caught sight of the armored hulk. It was readily apparent that he had inflicted significant damage to the Faalcomana soldier, but it was time to finish him – it was time to finish all of this.

As the soldier guardedly continued looking for Zaeleth, it didn’t take long for Zaeleth’s movement toward the outside wall to become slightly noticeable. Believing he had seen movement, the soldier perked up and moved laterally so he could keep his distance, but hopefully get a clean shot at Zaeleth.

Once the soldier was back in the main passageway they had been fighting in, Zaeleth slowly revealed himself with his hands loosely balled, but in the air. With the soldier’s pistol aimed at him, he knew any moment could be his last. The two briefly stared one another down, before Zaeleth broke the silence.

"Fuck you," he said in a firm, defiant tone as he hit the button. Explosions began erupting all over the room…

Zaeleth was in his twenties, but his long and mildly unkempt hair and what he could muster of a beard managed to make him appear older than he was and helped him fit in more with the older individuals that largely comprised the group he served with. He could hear the unintelligible voice of his closest friend, Javhod, as he
