I can't remember a time in my life when I was not completely obsessed with dogs! Especially the ones that nobody else wants. Growing up, I had to constantly resist the urge to bring home every stray puppy I saw, and each time, my heart broke a little more. When the opportunity finally arose for me to provide one of these lost souls with the perfect home, I drove straight to the shelter. However, I soon found myself overwhelmed by all the problems that come with rescuing a dog, so I set out to learn the best way to train and heal my new soulmate. Inspired by my favorite behaviorists and dog trainers, I decided to follow in their footsteps and help as many people and pups as possible. For the last 30 years, I have dedicated my time to studying different training techniques—the good, the bad, and the ugly—and I came to learn exactly which ones produced the results I wanted. The end goal is never just a trained dog. The goal is a well-adjusted, healthy, and happy dog. I soon learned that training them was easy, but losing them is hard. When my Gizmo slipped into his senior years, my world was turned upside down. I was so focused on the present that I hadn’t put any thought into the future. In those last years, our roles were reversed. He became the trainer, and I, the trainee. The lessons I learned from him have stayed with me forever and prepared me for the inevitable love and loss I would experience again and again. My books are compiled of tried and true techniques, life lessons, and healthy coping mechanisms that have personally helped me to work with and love my dogs. I am confident that I can provide them the best life from puppy to senior that they deserve and by the time you finish reading this, you will be too. —Hope Chambers

Introduction
The kids are screaming with excitement as we head to the car. After six months of begging, I finally gave in, and for her 14th birthday, my daughter Kelsey is getting the puppy of her dreams. Of course, she had no idea what puppy she wanted. At first, it was an Australian sheepdog, then it was a chihuahua, and then an Alaskan Malamute. After explaining to her that there are dogs out there that have been abandoned and some that have never had a home, to begin with, it was settled. The local shelter was where she would find her best friend.
When we arrived, we were introduced to Mama Daisy. A beautiful black and white Shih Tzu that had been abandoned. Thankfully, a local superhero had found her and brought her to the shelter, where she would be cared for and loved until her forever home was found. Surprise, surprise, Mama Daisy delivered three beautiful puppies just two days after she arrived. While she had secured a forever home with one of the employees, it was time for her babies to find theirs.
As we entered the room with the puppies, Kelsey dropped to her knees, and a little black ball of fluff ran straight into her arms. It was clear that the bond created at that moment would last a lifetime. She announced that his name was Sam, and we all agreed it suited him. We drove back home, where a new kennel, soft bed, puppy food, and tons of toys awaited our bundle of joy. The joy on their faces was enough to make me think that this was the best decision I had ever made.
Then reality hit, and as we walked in that door, little Sam turned into a terror! I would walk around the corner of the hallway, and there was Sam running with a toilet paper stream following behind. Sam! STOP.
He would glance at me for a second before running down the stairs, through the kitchen, and to the living room. The stream of paper gets longer by the second. Of course, Kelsey was off at school, and this had now become my clean-up.
Sam is a cutie for sure, his hair grew long, and Kelsey brushed him every day. She would even put a tiny little pony on top of his head to keep the hair out of his eyes. Yet, that sweet demeanor only seemed to last while she was around, and the moment she left the room, Sam would leave a puddle on the floor! Ugh!
Leaving my new leather pumps on the floor was my first mistake. Sam was teething and developed a taste for shoes of any type. Not just shoes, though, wooden chair legs did just as well, how on earth do I hide those?
The frustration set in, and I started second-guessing my decision. What have I gotten myself into? Kelsey goes to school every day and is off with her friends, playing soccer or band practice the rest of the time. Just as I finished the thought, Kelsey walked through the front door, dropping her book bag and getting down on her knees. She yelled out for Sam, and sure enough, that little fluff ball sprints down the hall and runs toward her, wiggling that little butt the entire way. That settles it. Sam can stay, but I need to step up and focus on getting this puppy trained if he wants to live through my wrath!
Puppies are a big responsibility, bigger than most people think. They don’t come preprogrammed, and everything they learn, they learn from you. If you are struggling with a similar situation, whether the puppy was for you or for your child, don’t worry, I have your back.
I have been studying, caring for, and training dogs for the last thirty years, and while some have brought me to the brink of madness, they have always brought me back with their unconditional love. Each of these pups has taught me valuable lessons, and every up and down brought me a little closer to understanding what they truly need.
Come along with me to learn the steps we took to turn Sam into a smart, obedient puppy.
Chapter 1: So, You Want a Puppy…
Are You Sure You’re Ready?
Dogs are spectacular, and they are just so cute, especially when they’re puppies. Yet so many people seem to forget that dogs grow up, and they continue to grow up for an average of 15 years! Adopting a puppy is easy enough to do, but caring for that puppy for all those years can become difficult, especially for people who work long hours or enjoy traveling.
Before committing your time, money, and energy to a dog, you need to ensure that you are adopting them for the right reasons, not just because they are cute! So, what is your reason?
Worker Dogs
Dogs have been bred for a multitude of reasons over the years, and knowing how lazy humans can be, the first breeds we engineered were designed to do our work for us. Whether you are looking for a farm dog to help care for your livestock, a guard dog to protect your family, or a hound dog to accompany you on hunting trips, I can guarantee there is a breed for you.
These dogs have been bred for their strong instincts, but if you are looking at adopting a worker pup, you are going to have to buy a lot more books! They require rigorous training and a strict routine in order to succeed in the jobs assigned to them.
It is important to remember that just because your dog is a worker, you don’t get to treat them like an employee. There is no clocking out after a hard day. They don’t even get to take leave for a
