Chapter 1: The Untouchable Icon
From Humble Beginnings to Gridiron Greatness
Orenthal James Simpson , known more colloquially as O.J. Simpson, was born in San Francisco, California, on July 9, 1947, into an environment that might have seemed more inclined to produce hard-knock lives rather than American football stars. Raised in the housing projects of the Potrero Hill neighbourhood, Simpson's upbringing was an exhibition of resilience and defiance against the odds. His skills in the Junior College arena led to numerous scholarship offers from four-year institutions.
Simpson chose to attend the University of Southern California (USC), a decision that would pave the way for his entry into football legend. His speed, agility, and power were unmatched. His brilliance on the field for the USC Trojans led to him winning the Heisman Trophy in 1968, an award given annually to the most outstanding player in collegiate football. The transformation from a boy with leg braces to a man clutching the most prestigious award in college football was complete, but Simpson was only just getting started.
From college, Simpson made his move
