The First Documented Sightings and Eyewitness Accounts
THE FIRST RECORDED encounter with the Mothman, one that would forever change the small town of Point Pleasant, took place on a cold November night in 1966. It was a sighting that would not only usher in a series of eerie events but would also birth a legend that continues to captivate us.
Roger and Linda Scarberry, along with Steve and Mary Mallette, were driving through the area known as 'the TNT area' - the site of a former World War II munitions plant. The dilapidated buildings and eerie, desolate landscape lent a peculiar air to the site. However, the landscape wasn't the only unusual thing they would encounter that night.
As they rounded a corner, their headlights illuminated something bizarre in the gloom - a large, hulking figure on the side of the road. According to their accounts, the creature was around seven feet tall with wings folded against its back. Its eyes, two bright red orbs, were described as 'hypnotic.' As the car approached, the creature reportedly took flight, following them as they sped away in terror. It pursued them down Highway 62, matching the car's speed before eventually disappearing into the darkness.
This account, widely reported in the local press, was the first of many sightings reported in and around Point Pleasant over the next year. Just a few days after the Scarberry and Mallette encounter, Marcella Bennett was visiting friends near the
