    About the Author

    Welcome!

I am so honored to share my passion for anchor charts with you. Anchor charts have been at the heart of my classroom since my first year of teaching in 2011. They bring my classroom to life. To me, walking into a classroom filled with anchor charts is like walking into a home filled with photographs. Photos document the memories the family has shared together—vacations, celebrations, achievements, and moments of pure joy. For a classroom, anchor charts document the memories of significant lessons, strategies that mold students into stronger readers and writers, and summaries of books we’ve read together and the lively discussions that followed afterward. As a teacher, anchor charts have become a hobby of mine, just as lettering, drawing, or coloring might be hobbies for others.

I wrote this book for two types of teachers: those who absolutely hate their handwriting and drawing talents and think they could never create the beautiful anchor charts they see on the internet and on other classroom walls, as well as anchor chart junkies who are looking to fuel their addiction with the inspiration found throughout this book. No matter which category you fall into, I hope this book gets your courage and creative juices flowing enough to put the book down and start creating!

    Getting Started

    What Are Anchor Charts?

When you hear the term anchor charts, do you think about a ship’s anchor? If you do, then you’re on to something. Anchor charts help make learning stick just like ship anchors keep the ship from floating away. They are effective because they are not just a poster on the wall, but charts that students create with their teachers. As coauthors, students can recall sitting on the carpet, raising their hands to add their thoughts, and their teacher writing it on the chart, and they will be able to bring back the memory of what learning occurred
