Kenzi

I haven't seen Erin since high school and the moment I look into her eyes, I'm in love all over again. She's my brother's best friend, and I don't know if I can destroy a friendship that's lasted so long. But the way Erin looks at me makes it difficult for me to stay strong and resist her. Everyone knows I'm different. I'm more awkward than the typical person, and I have horrible social anxiety, but Erin doesn't care. She just wants me.

Jenna is a steamy lesbian romance author of fast-paced instalove romance. Expect them to be over-the-top, absurdly ridiculous–but always with a happy ending.

    See Me - Jenna Kent

    1

    Erin

I feel like a fool, sitting in the bedroom of my beach house; anxious as hell. I wanted to see her: Kenzi.

I've loved this woman since she was a teen. I met her fourteen years ago when I was sixteen; she was Derrick's younger sister and kept to herself. She wore huge glasses and kept her nose buried in books, hardly making any friends because of her awkwardness. To me, she was the most beautiful woman—but off-limits due to being my best friend's sister, and not knowing if she was gay. I never said more than two words to her in all the time I'd known her.

Now here I am in my thirties; a tech billionaire heartthrob helping my business partner (and Kenzi's brother), who is preparing for his wedding. She will be staying in my beach house over the summer to help his fiancée, Tiffany. Desperately, I search for Kenzi on social media for the fiftieth time—only to feel defeated again, as she only posts content from other creators on her profiles and uses an avatar photo on every account.

I groan and slam my laptop shut. Alexis, my current girlfriend, stirs nakedly on the other side of my bed. I had given up any chance with Kenzi, when she was accepted into New York University and left for college. After that, I had focused on my career; I moved to California and entered the tech industry, developing several apps along with my partner Derrick--Kenzi's brother--and myself, making us both self-made billionaires. Derrick wasted no time finding a wife and eventually settled on Tiffany--whom I'm still learning to like--who can be quite temperamental due to her newfound wealth.

I look at Alexis and feel guilty for desiring Kenzi all over again. All I have of her are memories; she keeps in touch with Derrick only through texts or emails. He is just as excited about seeing her. She has done well for herself in journalism, taking on freelance projects since she's not keen on people; she has done some noteworthy work. As Alexis runs her hand across my arm adorned with tattoos--including the 'K Forever' ink--I stiffen. Yes, I'm a sicko for having that tattooed there: ‘K Forever’ stands for Kenzi Forever. I sigh again and Alexis sits up, her body naked and beautiful. We'd spent an amazing night together here in this bedroom. But now she needed to leave town for a month; one of her clients required a press tour and so she went as their publicist.

What’s wrong with you? She all but growls. I look up apologetically, not wanting to tell her that the love of my life will be arriving in an hour-- and that I wish she'd leave so Kenzi won't find out. Face-palming, I shake my head. Nothing, I lie, I'm just irritated about this wedding. Alexis softens and plants a kiss on my cheek; Tiffany has been a real bitch to her too. She climbs out of bed and walks off to the bathroom.

Derrick left thirty minutes ago to pick Kenzi up. I couldn't bring myself to do it-- we haven't had much of a relationship other than exchanging a few words here and there. Derrick wants to take her sightseeing before returning to the beach house. Alexis returns from the shower, surprised at me stripping the sheets and replacing them with new ones. She can sense something is off, but can't tell what's bothering me. Kenzi's name has been mentioned numerous times since I've known her, yet she's never seen me react like this before. She tightens the wrap on her towel and packs her things.

I have to be at the airport in an hour. I'd like to meet Kenzi before I leave; hopefully she arrives soon. I didn't respond to that, inwardly hoping she wouldn't show up. From the mirror of my vanity, she noticed me shrugging and spun around to look at me.

You're acting strange, Erin. What's wrong? Don't you like her or something?

I'm just ready for this wedding to be over with, I lied, not caring. She quickly dressed in comfortable sweats and a t-shirt, tying her long dark brown hair into a bun then putting on her Apple Watch. Helping Alexis maneuver down the stairs with her luggage, she had planned on leaving for the airport directly from my beach house to spend some quality time with me. But my old crush for Kenzi had suddenly reignited and I didn't know how to turn it off. Guilt gnawed at me as I should've been enjoying these precious moments with Alexis instead.

My heart sinks as Derrick's truck pulls in front of the house. I pray she walks through that door and despises me, so I can get over it before I do something reckless. If she shows even a small amount of interest, I'll be like a hunting lion pouncing on its prey.

Alexis kisses my cheek again at the bottom of the stairs then goes to the kitchen for food. My staff are arriving—I hired a live-in chef and cleaning crew for the summer,
