About this ebook
A dramatic and often humourous look at six black Canadians of diverse backgrounds who share a Toronto house. Their lives unfold against the backdrop of civil unrest which erupted when the Lost Angeles police officers on trial for the beating of Rodney King are acquitted. The fracas outside keeps intruding as characters clash, collide, and swap jokes about everything from racism to the status of Quebec as a distinct society, from Malcolm X to The Road to Avonlea.

Riot - Andrew Moodie
Act I
(Lights come up on stage to reveal GRACE at the dining table studying. EFFIE is on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, watching TV, eating Doritos. EFFIE slowly stands, points the remote control at the TV. The lights and music fade.)
WENDLE: Fuck Quebec!
(Lights up. The table is cluttered with their text and note books. EFFIE is lying on the couch. The TV is off.)
GRACE: Quebec is a distinct society!
WENDLE: What the fuck makes Quebec a distinct society?!
GRACE: The French language and culture.
WENDLE: Being a black man from Nova Scotia, does that not make me distinct?
GRACE: Yes you are distinct, but that doesn’t stop them from being distinct.

GRACE: They’re not saying they’re better than you, they are looking for the tools to protect their
