    About the Author

    Chapter 1: Just Friends

    Chapter Separator

Tracey strides confidently on the college campus, her height and statuesque figure impossible to miss. Her brown skin glows underneath the bright summer sun and her long, silk-pressed hair cascades down her back. She moves gracefully but with purpose, her fashionable outfit–a pair of denim shorts, a white crop top and a pair of heeled sandals–giving her a look of sophistication.

Heads turn as she passes, their eyes following her every move. She is used to it; she has always been popular among the college crowd, and it does not faze her. Tracey knows she looks good, and she owns it.

As she walks, she hears the birds tweeting, a chorus of skateboards on concrete, the whirring of tires on pavement, the wind whistling between buildings, the laughter of students in the quad. It is a gorgeous day on campus.

Tracey makes her way towards the student union, her destination being her best friend’s dorm room. She notices several other students on the way, some old friends, some unfamiliar faces, all of whom give her a friendly wave as they pass.

As she approaches her destination, Tracey’s confident steps slow, and her heart starts to race; she knows what awaits her. Taking a deep breath and straightening her posture, she enters the student union with a determined stride. She is ready to face whatever lies ahead.

Tracey finally reaches Haden’s dorm room and knocks on the door. Haden opens the door, and as usual, he’s dressed in a simple white shirt and a pair of jeans. He’s tall, dark-skinned, smart, and very rational. Haden doesn’t care much for the crowd, preferring to spend his time studying or discussing complex academic concepts.

He greets Tracey with a smile before ushering her inside. His room is small but neat, with a single bed against one wall and a desk with textbooks scattered across it.

Hey Haden, Tracey says, greeting her friend. I hope I’m not interrupting anything."

Haden shakes his head, stepping aside to let her in. No, not at all. I’ve been waiting for you actually, he replies, his forehead creased with a look of concern.
