In October 2019, myself, Director Diyan Zora, Associate Director Abi Falase and the Almeida Young Company gathered in a room in London to create a show together. Our starting point was a set of true historical incidents of so called ‘mass hysteria’; unexplained outbreaks of dancing, twitching, laughing and fainting. The outbreaks almost exclusively affected young women, particularly those in institutions, in which they had little or almost no power. We asked ourselves: what would an outbreak look like today?
Our rehearsal room soon became one of the most exciting spaces I’ve worked in. The company were not only deeply creative, thoughtful and generous, but full of courage, joy and passion. We worked hard, we were rigorous and brave and collaborative, it felt special and invigorating. Then on the day we reached a first draft, the pandemic hit and we all went into lockdown.
Across the following two years, we continued to work together at various intervals. Online, or in snatches physically, with masks, without masks; we took long breaks, we redrafted, and we kept trying. The show was scheduled three times and then cancelled three times. A few members left for jobs or drama school. New members joined. It was at times heartbreaking and exhausting, but we all felt the urge to keep coming together, and the Young Company’s kindness, care and support for each other never faltered.
I have been astonished and deeply moved by this group of young people, who, when faced with a world that has felt increasingly unsteady, and an industry that is often unkind and unjust, have shown nothing less than the utmost respect and compassion for each other, for themselves and for the work.
They are brave and strong, but also kind and gentle. I have learnt so much from them, and I hope our industry does too.
So, to every single one of the thirty Almeida Young Company members who came together across October 2019 to April 2022 to create The Maladies, thank you for your inspiring resilience. We are all so proud of you.
