About this ebook
As you travel with the Mighty Wolves and the Lady Wolves, those of you who recall, if one was not in Cope Hall by the tip off, would find themselves standing for the entire game. The Wolves' fans yelling "Troop, Troop!" as Tom Washington pulls down a rebound. You might recall the squad that averaged 100 points per game. My best memory is when the Wolves hosted the Eastern Regionals of the NCAA tournament in 1978. Cope Hall packed to the rafters, the Wolves hit the hardwood of Cope Hall, with the song "Flashlight". Who at that point knew they were watching the Division II Champions of 1978.
Since I have seen the Wolves since the early 60's, seeing such players as Booker, Mims, Kirkland, Wilson, Bell, Colston, and Green, just to name a few, I am asked, "Who was the best?" My reply is all, for all were winners! During those years, the race card was the issue. If you notice the box scores, the state championship game was not played at Cheyney until the 1970's.
As a volunteer coach for the basketball program, I believe if the teachings of good fundamentals are taught, one will surely win, or be very competitive.
I would like to thank all those members of the Mighty Wolves and those coaches who gave their all to the Mighty Wolves.

PREFACE
The history of the basketball team of Cheyney State Teachers College, now Cheyney University, is very enriched. This journal will take you back to the very beginning and take you to the National Division II Championship then onward to the '80s and the '90s.
In you travels, you will journey into the glory years of the Lady Wolves as they keep pace with the Mighty Wolves, guided by Coach C. Vivian Stringer, who, to this day, are still talked about.
There have been many moments of showmanship on the hardwood of Cope Hall starting in the decade of the '60s, running into the decade of the '80s. The names of Washington, Booker, Kirkland, Colston, Fields, Green, and Bell have left their mark on the hardwood of Cope Hall.
The Mighty Wolves are the only Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference member to win a male national title in basketball. The Wolves have led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with nineteen Eastern Division titles and fifteen Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles.
As you begin your journey back in time, you will find yourself in the season of 1929–1930 with the mighty eight playing with one ball. Enjoy the trip with the Wolves.
MIGHTY WOLVES
(1929–1999)
In the season of 1929–1930, the first recognized, uniformed squad was established at Cheyney State Normal School. The squad was coached by Mr. James Williamson, and they numbered only eight strong. The squad practiced with one ball and one basket, which was located outside. When bad weather hit the Wolves, they would travel into West Chester and practice at the Gay Street School. Members of the 1929–1930 squad went by the names of Beven, Derry, Harris, Felton, Stewart, and Williams.
In the 1930–1931 season, the Wolves had six new members. Those were as follows: Lynes, Ashurst, Johnson, Jones, Edmunds, and Foreman. The Wolves, still coached by James Williamson, held their own.
In 1932, Cheyney State Normal School became the Cheyney State Teachers College.
In the season of 1932, the Wolves were having some success. James Moore, a three-letter athlete, was the one leading the Wolves. Along with Moore, the roster read as follows: Lynes, Ashurst, Johnson, Wilson, Jones, Edmunds, and Foreman. The Wolves played such schools as Bowie State College, Delaware State, Downingtown Industrial, and Princess Anne.
In 1933, the Lady Wolves were established and coached by Ms. Viola Serrell. The Lady Wolves played their first game against Dover, losing 48–36. Members of the first Lady Wolves roster read as follows: Armstrong, Dept, Jeffers, McPherson, Mills, Mitchell, and Smith.
For the remainder of the '30s, the Wolves would hold their own as the decade of the '40s neared. No one knew that war was near.
The Wolves and Cheyney State Teachers College would have a shortage of males on campus, for most would serve their country by enlisting.
In the season of 1941, the Wolves of Cheyney State Teachers College and the Lions of Lincoln University played for the first time. This would not be the first athletic event between the two, for they had met on the football field, but this was the first on the hardwood. The Wolves would take the first since they had numbered sixty-five times since 1941, playing during the Thanksgiving break. The Wolves in 1941 were led by John Harris along with James, McCauley, Waters, and Brightful.
In 1946, the Lady Wolves welcomed Coach Mildred Dudley as Coach Serrell stepped down. Some of the outstanding Lady Wolves of the late '40s were Audrey Washington (1946), Ann Braxton (1947), Loretta Fisher, Mary Lee Thomas, Roberta Brevard, Renetta Jenkins, and Rosena Pilgrim.
