Capítulo I
Hércules Poirot dispuso su correspondencia en una pila ordenada frente a él. Recogió el sobre que estaba en la primera posición, estudió la dirección por un momento, luego cortó con cuidado el dorso del sobre usando un cortapapeles que tenía en la mesa del desayuno, expresamente para ese propósito, y extrajo el contenido. Dentro, había otro sobre, cuidadosamente sellado y lacrado, marcado como: Privado y confidencial
.
Las cejas de Hércules Poirot se alzaron un poco sobre su cabeza ovalada y murmuró:
—¡Paciencia! Nous allons arrive! —y una vez más puso en juego el cortapapeles.
Esta vez, el sobre contenía una carta, escrita con una letra bastante temblorosa y puntiaguda. Había varias palabras muy subrayadas.
Hércules Poirot desdobló el papel y lo leyó. En la parte superior aparecía nuevamente la leyenda: Privado y confidencial
. En el margen derecho estaba la dirección: Rosebank, Charman’s Green, Bucks, y la fecha, veintiuno de marzo.
"Señor Poirot: Me lo ha recomendado un antiguo y querido amigo, que sabe lo preocupada y disgustada que estoy en estos últimos tiempos. Claro que mi amigo no conoce los hechos; por tratarse de un asunto estrictamente confidencial no se los he confiado a nadie. Él me ha dicho que usted es la discreción personificada, y que no tema verme envuelta con la policía, cosa que, si mis sospechas resultan fundadas, me desagradaría muchísimo. Pero por supuesto, es posible que esté completamente equivocada. No me siento lo suficientemente lúcida —sufriendo como sufro de insomnio y habiendo padecido el pasado invierno una grave enfermedad— para investigar
