Preface
Short Stories of a Life Journey
My stories range from weird, strange, and funny to a little of life's serious stuff thrown in.
In retrospect, it seems unusual happenings have dominated most of my journey and remained an integral element in my life. Although there have been tragedies and disappointments, I have chosen to enumerate only a few of those stories. Alas, as my friend Bill would say, We all have a story.
My purpose for sharing my journey is to promote a laugh, smile, or a thought. However, it is mostly through the insistence of my cousin Ellen's constant hounding to write about the weird and funny things that have happened throughout my life.
So here we are! Just remember, life is transient, and we're just passing through. So laugh, enjoy, and relive the moments with me.
Transformation
I truly believe that I am liken to a butterfly, awaiting the moment of transformation with many different ongoing changes. A myriad of wonderful people has entered my life, thus helping me become the person I am today. Now, I am the evolving butterfly, doing my best to bring forth the very best of me.
Please don't take offense at any of my stories. This is simply my journey, and life is too short to sweat the small stuff!

It's your road, and yours alone, others may walk it with you,
but no one can walk it for you.

this is the way.

Chapter 1
The Informative Years
My earliest memory was of my mother's marriage to my new daddy. He had chosen Mama and me to be his new family. Having adored him from the beginning, he had made an infinite impact on me.
Moving On
Gram had raised me for the first two years and had been a tremendous influence and role model. She had been born in the late 1800s in an Indian territory near Madill, Oklahoma. She was instilled with Indian traditions and superstitions. After bonding with her for the first two years, it appeared a big change was about to happen in my young life.
When my new daddy relocated Mama and me to Weatherford, Texas, I began having nightmares. This condition followed me throughout most of my life. As the story goes, I had been tucked into bed, and my parents were asleep in the bedroom next to mine. Not only did I experience dreams and nightmares, but it seems I walked in my sleep as well. Being only four years old, the story of my dysfunctional slumber was repeated many times throughout the family.
The story goes, rising from my bed late one night. I presumably, went to the front door, unlocked it, and walked out into the dark night. The most unusual fact about this sleepwalking event was that not only had I walked out of the house but right down the main street of this sleepy little town. Fortunately for me, my daddy heard the door slam. By the time he put on his clothing, I was already down the street.
It seems there had been no cause to be afraid or alarmed on my part. As he carried me back to the house, it was most likely knowing my daddy was there who made me feel safe and secure. He continued to be a significant factor in my life, many times carrying and supporting me throughout the years. Daddy and Gram played the most important roles in my life, not only in the formative years but later in my adult life.
My Magic Coat
Not only did I have dreams, nightmares, and sleepwalking but also a fertile imagination. Of course, in a four-year-old's mind, everything was a possibility. Around this impressionable time, my gram sent me a beautiful furry soft coat. She explained to me that it was a magical coat. So every time I put it on, I could do wonderful things. And so it was!
Across from our house lived a family with two small children, assumingly around my age. So without hesitation, I challenged my friends to a magical ride. With much excitement, both children agreed to fly with me. With each child in hand, I raised my arms, and we were off into the mind of a four-year-old, flying in a world known only to three innocent, earthly children. I'm sure our journey was successful, for I was not reprimanded or corrected in any way for my actions. All I knew was that I had a magic coat, a magical coat indeed!
The Bricks
Moving to the big city at age five was certainly a different atmosphere. Growing up at the end of the war and living in Liberator Village was unlike any place I had lived before. Most, if not all, of the adults worked at the bomber plant.
There were two sections available to families of these wartime workers, and there were the Whites,
and there were the Bricks.
My small family took residence in the Bricks.
Our apartment was barracks style with many rows of apartments comprising our new home. The relative closeness of each unit made it seem like one big family. It was as though every parent was responsible for every child on our block. Knowing this probably kept a lot of kids in line.
These neighborhood children ranged from ages five to fifteen. Most children as young as ten had jobs of one sort or the other. Being only five left me in the younger category of children, but it did not prevent me from interacting with the older kids. One of the older boys was riding his bicycle up and down the sidewalk, just daring anyone to ride on the handlebars. When challenging the group of children, he had no takers
except for me. It was as though the daredevil gene came alive in me.
So here I was, ready for my glorious adventure. Unfortunately, this was not meant to be a victorious ride because an ill-fated accident occurred. Not exactly sure of the cause for this hapless accident, but perhaps it might've been the fact that one of my feet got caught in the spokes of the bicycle wheel, causing two young bodies to momentarily flight in different directions. It certainly gave cause for alarm. On closer observation, my face was a bloody
