WSTĘP
Léopold Sédar Senghor to człowiek literacki zarówno z kręgu kultury afrykańskiej, jak i zachodniej. Przemierzył wzdłuż i wszerz XX wiek, niosąc ze sobą wzloty i upadki chaotycznej historii, w której sam odegrał znaczącą rolę. Współczesny imperiom kolonialnym, wojnom światowym, dekolonizacji i nadejściu globalizacji, był w stanie prowadzić jednocześnie dwie kariery - urzędnika i polityka oraz poety i pisarza. Jednak Senghor zawsze widział siebie przede wszystkim jako poetę i to właśnie poprzez swoją twórczość literacką prowadził walkę z kolonializmem i przymusową asymilacją Afrykanów w Imperium Francuskim. Ruch negritude, który rozwijał wraz z Aimé Césaire (1913-2008) od 1934 roku na rzecz uznania czarnej tożsamości i kultury afrykańskiej, skłonił go do obrania drogi politycznej. Jako członek parlamentu rządzonego przez Francję Senegalu, a później jako minister za czasów generała de Gaulle'a (francuski mąż stanu, 1890-1970), Senghor symbolizował współpracę między Francją a niektórymi z jej byłych afrykańskich kolonii, co krytykowali jego przeciwnicy.
Wybrany pięciokrotnie na prezydenta niepodległego Senegalu w latach 1960-1980, był architektem stabilności politycznej i gospodarczej swojego kraju, pomimo pewnych starć. Jego decyzja o dobrowolnym odejściu od władzy w 1980 roku przyczyniła się do powstania jego legendy jako wielkiej afrykańskiej głowy państwa.
Przez całe życie był zagorzałym obrońcą języka francuskiego i prowadził kampanię na rzecz jego międzynarodowego uznania poprzez założoną przez siebie Frankofonię. Léopold Sédar Senghor to człowiek nietypowy, który potrafił narzucić ojczyźnie i francuskiemu środowisku literackiemu swoją wizję uniwersalnej cywilizacji opartej na szacunku dla różnych kultur.
