PROLOGUE
This is a story that has been tugging at my heart to share. After working with thousands of children in schools over many years, I have come to the realization that children are insightful teachers.
I am in awe of the wisdom of youth to impact and touch the lives of adults by how they perceive and experience their world. They see things from a place of profound wisdom by living in that state of child-like wonder. They speak and share love so freely and use the gift of imagination to paint their world.
This book is a celebration and remembering the child in all of us. My deepest wish it that we may live life connected to our own inner child and recapture the innocence of youth so that we may share love with everyone who touches our lives.
My intention is to speak to the heart of each child and adult who reads this book that they may know they are the essence of love. I want my readers to know they are important, they are unique, and there is no one else like them in the world. When we know and accept that truth, we are guided to live a more fulfilled existence through good times and challenging times. The one constant in life is that change will happen. When we are grounded in knowing that we have a deep belief and trust in ourselves, we can access our intuition to guide us even in the most challenging times of life.
My hope is that this book will serve as a wake-up call to remember what matters most in life—to live fully and to love with an open heart. When we take time to be present, to play, to share, to laugh and cry, to connect authentically with others, we begin to know how precious life is and how important we are in each other’s lives. By reconnecting with our purest self, we appreciate how we may impact someone else and how someone else may impact us.
Discover through Katie and Mr. Bigg the power of love as they show up intentionally as gifts in each other’s lives. Enjoy their journey of how a child teaches a man to love—just by being.
Be willing and ready to embrace life and love each other!
DEDICATION
I will never forget Bernard Stegner for teaching me that power of imagination.
Sandra Robinson, Joanne Wong and Becky Summers—you have been my guiding angels, always believing in me, who spoke belief in me, guiding me to love and believe in myself.
Chapter 1
THE BIGG MAN
Dawson Bigg sat forward in his leather chair, reviewing the email one more time before hitting Send. His executive assistant, Phyllis, had been with him for twenty years and was quite capable of handling things in his absence. After all, he reasoned, he was only going to be gone two weeks.
He had not taken a vacation in years, but his doctor said if he didn’t take a break soon, he would drop dead in the middle of the street. When Doc added, "The flowers I’ll send to your funeral will come with a sash that says I told you so."
Dawson got the message. It couldn’t hurt, and maybe he’d even come up with the next innovation while baking under the hot Caribbean sun. There’d be no one to interrupt him, and he’d have adequate time to think.
Bigg thrived on his workaholic schedule. His typical day started at 6 am, and he seldom left the office before 9 pm. The lines between weekdays and weekends had blurred beyond recognition years ago. His life was his work, and his work was his life. Nothing else mattered to him.
He became the managing partner of his company at the age of thirty-six and was responsible for much of its success. Bigg was content with his life, despite being a fifty-six-year-old bachelor. Over the years, his friends tried to set him up numerous times with smart, attractive women, but he rarely asked them for a second date. There was no room for anything or anyone who stood between him and his work.
He took a moment to admire his kidney-shaped walnut desk, now clear of files. The leather inlay betrayed years of hard use with the tell-tale coffee rings and indentations from the pressure of writing countless proposals. Its rounded curves aligned with his philosophy about life and business. To him, the circular design represented infinite possibilities for solutions. There were no hard edges when it came to solving problems.
Phyllis appeared in the doorway. "You better get going.
