THE MEETING
Amaka
Lagos life was hard enough, she fumed inwardly as a notification for a seven-day vigil from her church’s WhatsApp group came in. The struggles through the mad traffic on the ever-busy road are draining enough, so the idea of staying awake while spending precious nights on hard plastic chairs wasn’t welcoming at all. Without the slightest remorse, she concluded that she would join the vigil in the ‘Spirit’.
*****
On the fifth day of the vigil, she connected via Instagram live stream from the comfort of her home. However, Amaka wished she was physically present. She was the type that functions best after eight hours of good sleep but the vigil kept her awake night after night, for several hours after the close of the program. Perhaps if she’d been there physically, she would have been exhausted enough to sleep off immediately, without having to resort to binging on social media platforms in the middle of the night.
But wishes weren’t horses; she sighed as she scrolled through her phone in search of her social media apps, feeling very irresponsible about being online at such an ungodly hour. Yet, in the past few days, besides counting her ceiling boards severally, only the social media had successfully lured her to sleep after a few scrolls through the news feed.
Things weren’t going as expected
, she muttered to herself.
Glancing at her wall clock, it read 1:00 am. Why is the world asleep except her? She sighed, hoping a few more scrolls through some posts of the day would eventually do the trick. But she became increasingly frustrated when at about 2:30 am, she was still flipping through apps. At this time, she was supposed to be too exhausted to keep her eyes open, but she felt energized.
The gram is too active to stir sleep, Facebook is more like it
, she convinced herself as she exited one app in search of another.
To ensure greater boredom, she went on her Messenger straightaway, a part of the Facebook app she hates visiting, no thanks to the unsavoury elements there. However, it was her go-to tonight in a bid to get a few hours of sleep before dawn. The avalanche of messages in her inbox shocked her. Some read as far back as three years ago. Well, instead of being rewarded with sleep on such a desperate night, she found herself guiltily responding to her messages, one after the other.
An hour later, she started feeling sleepy at last but for some weird reason, she felt the need to respond to the last message in her inbox. She smiled dreamily as she read the message which says;
It’s my last message to you, Amaka. Today makes it a year since I started writing to you without a single reply. Thanks and God bless you.
She knew she should sleep but then, a need to respond to this message
